I wish we had an overarm mill at work!
I know a few on here have Lathes and Milling machines, I picked up more tips watching this video than I'd have found out by myself in a year , and I don't even speak Russian, Not a DRO in sight , all freehand, the guys got skills

At 5:45 did he cut the keyways using the longitudinal travel only with the lathe not spinning? Wow, I wouldn't have thought of doing it that way.
Making change gears (spur gears) be no problems with vertical mill using appropriate tool and arbor, I was testing out my new (cheap chinese) rotary table to see how well it divides, - obviously with the wrong tool for spline making - a 3mm slot cutter , in a drill chuck instead of the correct collet chuck / arbor . It was accurate considering I just used the degree wheel , not the dividing plates. An end mill from overhead would be better again , but obviously only a poor substitute compared to a Horizontal mill .
Hmm, maybe I can make some spare axles for my Lightweight ,
Have often pondered how to use my lathe as a mill, ie mount the work piece on the table somehow and the cutting bit in the lathe head?
Ive got a small sliding mill table with T slots, only about 4x5" table if your interested, take tool post off lathe and put mill table in its place , put cutting tool in lathe chuck . I don't think I'll need it now Ive got the mill.

Alternatively if you've got a Quickchange tool post you can hold the work direct in the tool post - have done that to make keyways etc.
Thanks for the offer! I'm not ready at the moment. I might have a look in Hare & Forbes when I am in Perth next....
Dammit, you've got me Youtubing machining when I should be working!!!!![]()
Sounds like my life these days
I thought about getting a milling attachment for the lathe- bought a milling machine instead. Also I cut a few internal keyways by 'racking' in the lathe- very hard on both the machine and the operator. I bought a metal shaper a couple of months ago- keyways are now a breeze and internal splines will be coming soon.
Currently working on making the missing components of a universal dividing head for the mill, this will enable cutting of gears with any number up to 400 teeth, also helicals. Fun stuff.
