    Disovery V8 Series 1 1997, homemade snorkel

    Hi

I'm going to attempt to make a homemade stainless snorkel, has anyone made one themselves and if you can share some tips then I'd appreicate it.
I've sourced some cheap 3" pipe from a crowd down on the Gold Coast 76.2 x 1.6 304 320 GRIT SATIN POLISHED TUBE - PER METER [T30407616-S] - $35.00 : Wellington Enterprises and suppose first question is what length pipe is required. I've assumed 2x 1m lengths would be okay? Also does anyone know a good place in Brisbane to get rubber elbows and flex hose from?

    Thanks

I would 1st ask the question why do you need one?
2nd I suggest look at e-bay or in market section here, they pop up all the time and if time comes to sell, they do not look home made and instead of putting people off buying your car, they will be seeing a proper system.

A good friend always mentioned how his snorkel was great for river crossings till I finally had the heart to tell him they are not for that but fresh cleaner air.

It made him somewhat sad but in actual fact, he never went any deeper than the axles anyhow so made no sense really.

Save your cash I suggest unless you are planning an outback trip and spend it on low water alarm or radiator flush or similar.

Explain? On my last two days out 4wdriving with friends I had no water in my air cleaner. They had water in the air cleaner of a HJ47 Land Cruiser and a GQ Patrol. I have a snorkel, they don't.

I fitted one to my RRC when a friend went through a deep puddle on an outback road at speed and hydrauliced the engine.
Not for deep crossings? I have done 700MM with no preparation and boy I do not think you could do that in an RRC with normal inlet behind the LH headlight.
Its the dust thing that IMHO is a crock. If you are in convoy you get the same dust high or low. BUT at least the snorkel gives room to fit a precleaner in my case a Unifilter sock.( which gets VERY dirty if I follow a road train along a dirt road)

I had water washing up over the bonnet. Deep enough for me. They didn't. Snorkels work and are very cheap insurance. Mine cost about $70 and a few hours of my time.

Perhaps I should have been more specific.

A snorkel was 1st designed to get clean(er) air to the motor, the dust stirred up in wheel arches and hot-dirty air does nothing for your engine.

If installed perfectly with no leaks they will allow you to cross deeper water than an air intake that is sucking air through the engine bay or wheel arch that is a given. To rely on it crossing a river risky at best.

Crossing a deep river in a modern car is absurd anyhow, thats what boats are for. Very old totally mechanical jiggies can pull it off but anything with alternators, radios or god forbid electric windows.

Problem is that modern cars, that is RRC's and disco1 onwards give such a good ride and do so many things with ease that we do perhaps not appreciate what hard work they are doing underneath.

They work very hard, just touch a shock absorber after a rough road and see how hot that got.

Add water crossings to show a mate how deep you went only to spend the next 6 months trying to get it running right again is something I rather leave for the You Tube guys.

    Thats just me though.

Oh, let alone all the water the hot diffs suck in because the breather pipes are broken or as standard not long enough.

Hope nothing ever hapens to anyone here but have seen quite a few cars come to their demise.

Thanks for your stories guys, but is anyone out there who has built a snorkel themselves who could offer advice? I've discovered that Clarke Rubber provide elbows so I'll try get to a store on the weekend to see exactly what they have and if it'll do the job. I'll let you know.

The one pictured IMO looks better than the Safari etc snorkels.

To comment on the above, not all snorkels are water tight, the current factory LR ones for eg are called RAI (raised air intakes) because they are not sealed and will let water in.
