Is it possible for the 230 transfer case to engage both high and low causing the transfer case to lock up solid? I would have thought it impossible but I have had that situation a few times now when I don't put it in low all the way. I can hear a noise slowly getting louder then bam no progress until I reverse. And its not like a broken gear because i travel a fair distance before it does it. Once in hi no problem.

It sounds to me that the poster has the transmission in diff lock and not fully in low.
It could be that the wind up of the transmission increases until it pops out of low, but the transmission would still be in windup.
Reversing will reduce the wind up and allow the transmission to be shifted to high.
I once broke the hi low lever knob off an old Toyota FJ40 trying to get it into high even after reversing. Jacking up a front wheel will also fix it, or run one onto a low friction surface.

I'm with phillip, wind up in the transcase.
No center lock engaged. No wind up either. Driving straight line and cruising without loss of traction. Both rear wheels lock solid.
Ah you never mentioned rear wheels locking up. Have you had a look in the diff?
Or something jamming in the handbrake drum?

2000 Def no tc. Does have a maxi fitted to rear. Only happens in low range. Not keen on reproducing it. I'll have to lift a wheel or two.
Would a dragging handbrake heat up and grab like that?
I'm wondering now if what's happening is I'm getting a shift from low to high and just because of the difference in rpm of the engine it's not locking but reducing the rear wheel speed so much it feels like it's locked up. Both times I'm just idling along.
So no load on box or case shift's from low to high by itself and rpm difference being lower than idle causes the rears to drag.... hymmm
