Cooling system flow
I have a 300tdi and have placed a temp gauge half way down the head. It is reading a bit above 200F for around town driving. As thermostat opens at 192F that's not so bad. As I put load on the engine (towing etc) it starts to rise to about 220F, and as I back off the revs is settles back to 200ish. The dash gauge does not move. Is this normal or could I get better flow through somehow? At what temp. would I have to start worrying about head damage etc?
Cheers

For the TD5 as a guide from the manual:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>The thermostat is closed at temperatures below approximately 82C (179F). When the coolant
temperature reaches approximately 82C the thermostat starts to open and is fully open at approximately 96C
(204F). In this condition the full flow of coolant is directed through the radiator. In cold ambient temperatures the engine
temperature can be raised by up to 10C (50F) to compensate for the heat loss of the 10% exposure to the cold
coolant return from the radiator bottom hose.[/b][/quote]
Also, I'm not sure how the TDi temp gauge works, though on the TD5 it is setup to quickly bring the needle up to the central position, not requiring a lot of heat. After this the motor needs to get very hot to make it move again when it skyrockets, assuming it moves at all.

I think most vehicles have the temp gauge as close as possible to the thermostat, that way you should get closer to constant temperatures. That might be the problem, but I am sure somebody here knows better than me 8O :?

there could be a slight air lock around the temp sender, so its
actually reading the steam/air temp and not the water.
or the head could be slightly blocked creating a slow point where the
water heats up longer that elswhere??? try some block/head cleaner
and see what comes out.
also how cheap is the temp gauge??? if its a
30 buck one from supercheap then toss it out and
get a real one.
my disco dropped 25deg just from changing from cheap to VDO.

Thanks for the suggestions. The gauge is a reasonable one and brandnew. I have done a flush about 10,000 ago.
Does anyone know what temp. I should start to get concerned with, before the head doesn't like it??
Cheers
