    Clicky front end - CV's??

The county has developed a nasty clicking/clattering in the front end in low range, full lock with the CDL engaged.

Took it for a drive round the front yard (dry almost sandy soil at present) just now to check it out and make sure I wasn't missing something.

1st low, no CDL: - full lock left or right - no noise
1st low, CDL engaged, clattering and banging at full lock (either left or right)
1st low, no CDL, front locker engaged - same noise.

CV's are the Rovingtracks ones the same as were made for the D1, so they are likely to be tough/soft like Ashcroft ones. They've been in there for about 70K km's and done a reasonable amount of off road and towing work so I wouldn't be surprised if they are due for reworking like the Ashcroft's do.

Wheels rotate smoothly when not under load, and I've dropped the swivel oils and there's no obvious nastiness come out so I think the next thing is to pull the CV's and have a look.

Is there anything I'm missing before I start dismantling it?

Is it both sides? I would doubt that both c.v's would be showing the same symptoms at the same time

To be honest its damn hard to tell where its coming from. Noise is about the same at both wheels, and being an Isuzu doesn't help as there is plenty of background clatter mixed in.
I thought the same as you, and I was starting to think it was a front diff issue until I engaged the locker and the problem remained.

I'll pull the RH one first as I'm guessing the short side CV gets more of a hard time from impact loads that the long side.

I have the same CVs, they developed the same symptoms after approx 40k, I took them out and reworked them but 20k later the noise is back

    Thanks for the feedback.
I'd hoped that the rework would be a once-off, but doesn't sound promising if yours are making the noise again.

Did both sides need about the same amount of work when you did them?

I'd be checking the Uni-Joints first, Regards Frank.

Thanks guys - a mate at work also suggested unis.
I greased them yesterday and there wasn't anything obviously wrong, but its a quick/simple job to drop the shaft to check them properly so will do that before going any further.

If you jack up the front wheels and put the transfer case in neutral you can give the uni's a good work out with a pry bar, when you greased them did any grease get expelled by the new grease, what colour was it, rusty,?, if the uni's check out, while the wheels are up you can turn the wheels and check for any noises or chunkiness, regards Frank.

Grease was just typical darkened stuff - no rust or nastiness.
Can't feel any roughness when rotating the wheels while at full lock.
Dropped the front propshaft - unis are free and smooth. Took it for a quick drive in front paddock with the shaft off - nice and smooth until I lock the front diff then the clattering starts on full lock.
Looks like I'm pulling the CVs on the weekend
