300 tdi clanging noise from engine.

    Found the problem.
This engine was still running but making a horrible clang.
Crank had about 4mm end float, front half anyway.
#2 Main bearing cap had 1 bolt finger tight and the other was only held in by the oil pick up tube.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.

This was not my engine, luckily.
I swapped out this engine out for a known runner in another members disco.
Curiosity got the better of me and I needed to see what all the noise was about.
The clang came on all of sudden.
The only warning sign possibly was it trashed a fan belt a few moths earlier.

Upon tearing it down, I would say someone had put new bearings through it at some stage as they are in excellent condition, but failed to torque #2 main cap.

Usually from poor machining practice. If this crank was ground to undersize bearings and not enough of a radius cut where the journal abutts the counterweight then the stress concentration at that point will cause a fracture to propagate.
