Demisting front windscreen!

Hiya'll.

Around this time of year most of us Defender and Series vehicle drivers get struck by the dreaded misted windscreen :roll:

The gods only know how many times I've pulled out hankies or whatever other loose clothe was nearby to scrub at the windscreen whilst driving

Of course this doesn't usually impact those with aircon, however that's a luxury I do not have at the moment :-)

Just browsing through a John Craddocks catalogue and I noticed they have heated windscreens for 90/110's!

I've done some reading up and some companies even offer such things for Series vehicles (eg. http://www.uroglas.com/trolleyed/94/index.htm).

Now it's a moderately expensive replacement as apart from the windscreen there's all the wiring, relays, switches, etc. to be put in place...

Just wondering if anyone in Aus. has looked at such a setup? Apparently from the TD5 onwards it was an option, though I haven't seen or heard of anyone having it.

Also at one stage I'd like to tint the windows (I know you can only have very light tint on the front windscreen) - was wondering if the heating would screw up the possibility to have a tint?

As for the possible costliness when the glass is broken via flying rock or other such object, I am planning on getting the bonnet mount for a spare tyre. I've heard they act as really good windbreaks and can be quite handy at deflecting stray rocks ;-)

Also does anyone know if this would require an Engineering certificate? Any idea what the ADR says about such things?

as soon as i would turn on the heater it would instantly fog up so quick that i would have to
pull over straight away as i couldnt see where i was going....it was that bad....

the 110s have a rubber reed valve in the bottom of the air intake (lefthand guard)
this would hold water and as soon as the heater was turned on to demist...
it would fog up even worse....

i removed the vent from the guard and got the hose in there and cleaned out all the mud
which was blocking the reed valve.....
havent had a problem since......and the smell has gone from the system as well.....

check yours to see if its clean.....</span>

Never had misting problems with the 110 (aircon) but always have had problems with the 2a, but not usually this time of the year as its hot, and not for years as there has been hardly any rain, and very dry air. The demisters on it are not very effective. Forty years ago the 2a I had then I fitted with an electric demister that stuck to the base of the windscreen with suction cups. It was very effective, but I have not seen one since I got this 2a. I am thinking about making one.

there have been a number of threads on the old LRE board over the years re the heated Defender windscreen, and the concensus was get 'em if you can !

I well remember driving up the Gold Coast freeway 2 years ago, early January, early evening thunderstorm, 120km/h in the fast lane, and the whole f?&%$#@ windscreen went white in an instant, and my undies changed to a slightly darker shade at about the same time. 8O

Air conditioned Defenders are not imune,

It takes a bit of fiddling but it needs the aircon, heater and fan to be just right.

Valve in the air intake goes a long way towards fixing but doesn't do the whole job, especially when its cold and wet driving across the mountains.

But i have also had to get up earler in the morning to scrap ice off the out side of the windsceen and the inside

But hopefully not any more

Go to Supercrap Auto and they have a product made by a company called Rainex that puts a coating on the windscreen that prevents the dredded mist!

I used to carry one of those window cleaner tools in my Series vehicles,works really well.
It really annoys me when somebody else drives my truck and does the wipe the screen trick,I end up having to clean the screen as the mess creates returns to it each day.The aircon fixes it no probs,but many dont realise this.
