Can't find anything loose and it isn't coming through the steering. Not a sharp metallic noise more of a sharp (quite loud) bang not thump (how's that for a description?) I'm hoping someone with a S1 Disco has had the same problem and can point me in the right direction before I pull the dash apart. Everything under the bonnet and the suspension seems to be screwed down tight and I'm not missing any cats or dogs and all the children are accounted for!
Cheers

Can you feel it thought the steering wheel. as the disco 1 has the same steering set up as the Range Rover classic . This has a plastic safty bit down the cloum in the dash . This is too break if you have an accident.and give the steerin wheel a bit of give. But some times over time they will break and cause a noise when going over bumps. But you usaually feel it thought the steering wheel

many thanks to everyone's suggestions.
It was a bloody annoying fault and only by accident when I was underneath the front rhs today and I couldn't fit where I needed to go (fat bastard syndrome) so put the wheels on full lock then accidentally found the problem. The sway bar bracket that is welded to the chassis is totally broken off but in the usual manner when the wheels are dead ahead the damn thing lines up with the welds and it isn't obvious (to me anyway or Landrover Wodonga I might add!), only when the wheels are turned to full lock and it displaces does it become apparent.
Been broken for a while by the looks of it which goes some way to explaining the old girl's rather flighty behaviour 'at speed' on the dirt. (and I thought it was just my new medication)
Anyway thanks again for all your suggestions, if you're in Albury/Wodonga and see a dark green Disco leaning into the corners before it actually gets to them, wave!.
Cheers
