Disco bang

very broad ask here, but I've got a mystery banging noise coming from what appears to be the dashboard/ firewall area on the drivers side when I go over bumps. Can't find anything loose and it isn't coming through the steering. Not a sharp metallic noise more of a sharp (quite loud) bang not thump (how's that for a description?) I'm hoping someone with a S1 Disco has had the same problem and can point me in the right direction before I pull the dash apart. Everything under the bonnet and the suspension seems to be screwed down tight and I'm not missing any cats or dogs and all the children are accounted for!

How old are the shock absorbers (both front and rear) and the steering damper?

I have been fooled by noises seemingly coming from the front that have ultimately originated from problems at the rear.

Also do you notice if this happens when it is dry or wet?

Does it happen when the steering wheel is turned or straight ahead?

Sorry more forensic than a TV show

shocks and springs are new (noise was there before and after I replaced them), but the steering damper is a good suggestion along with the gearbox mounts (engine mounts appear ok) so thanks for the tips, I will have a look at these tomorrow. Happens either dry or wet, steering straight or turning.
Just remembered being told that a couple of months ago that the rubber body mounts were worn out but after buying new mounts couldn't find any that looked any different to the new ones so had a slack attack and didn't bother, perhaps there's some located where I can't see?
Have you guys replaced them and what are the rough locations. The spare parts guy told me I needed 20 or so but have only ever found perhaps half a dozen mounts so where the hell are they all? I've lost my manual/cdrom somewhere but seem to remember they weren't on it

check also your exhaust mounts....
may be the exhaust hitting somewhere....

but sounds more like a shock bush......
loosen the locking nut and check to make sure your shock isnt loose.....

i am assuming you have gone over every nut and bolt under the thing with
a spanner to make sure it is all tight.....

dash board noise

My 89 Rangie always has loud "crack" noises from the dash. Not so much on bumps but when the air is on. Cant find the problem so just put up with it. Have checked all the bolts and screws are tight. Maybe some sealer or tape was missed when assembled.

My s1 Disco had a similar noise. Finally isolated it by jumping up and down on each corner. The bottom rubbers on the driver side front shock absorber were loose, causing the knock. Bit of a pain to replace, had to make a clamp to hold the shock body whilst the nut was undone (bloody loktite on everything on a disco!)
Its only a L/R thing!

had a similar problem awhile back and took ages to find what it was the
bullbar had moved contacting the body it was hard to pick where the noise was coming from as some noise does travel
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

I think that noise might just been something contracting as it gets cold from the air.
