    Td5 Temperature Gauge Oddness

The temperature gauge on my 2003 D2 Td5 has always risen fairly steadily from cold to 'normal' when I've been driving but I've noticed over the last couple of days that the gauge rises to about 1/3 of the way up then stays there for quite some time (about 15 minutes or so) before quickly rising to the 'normal' position over a matter of 3 or so seconds.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

It's done this since the car was serviced recently. I just want to know what the causes might be so I don't end up being one of those PITA customers who start with "Ever since you..."

    Thanks in advance!

Go to the sensor at the front LH of the engine and pull the plug off and give it a squirt with contact cleaner and ditto the socket.
Mine stayed on 1/3 one day and that fixed it.
However there is a possibility that the sensor is stuffed and you will soon find out.

If you are talking about the standard one, its useless as a high temp warning anyway. I'm hoping you know that by the time it moves into the caution/danger zone it will be too late and damage done.

Yes that is true and a much better solution is an accurate gauge.

However also be aware that the temp gauge also tells the ECU whether the engine is to operating temperature, and there are engine operation conditions that depend on the temp being read correctly.

AFAIK one is that the transmission will not lock up under a certain engine temperature, that the ECU sees from the sensor.
