    TD5 Valve Stem replacement

Does anyone know if its possible to replace the valve stem seals in a TD5 without removing the head? I've seen examples on the web on petrol engines using compressed air and even rope in the cylinder, but nothing with diesels. I have what appears to be a leaking seal(s) on cylinder #4. Oil in the cylinder and compression test is comparable to the other cylinders.

I was thinking that if I put the piston at tdc and then add compressed air through the glow hole, then it would be sufficient to hold the valve in place. Should this work in a TD5?

Obviously if it all goes wrong, I'll be taking the head off to retrieve the valve and then can reco the whole head the normal way.

Cylinder 5 has no glow plug if you are wanting to do them all
What leads you to conclude that you have leaking valve stem seals on one cylinder?
How many ks and what are the symptoms?

Personally I would pull the head I would be surprised if valve guide seals were your only problem

What's the piston clearance on a TD5? On a tdi it is small enough that the valve only drops a mm at tdc. Get it wrong and you're cursing though.

Valve stem oil seals have no bearing on compression. If you add oil and compression rises you probably have a ring problem

#5 is certainly a question mark.

It is an EU3 TD5 with 245000km on it. Symptoms are blue smoke and rough running on startup which clears after the engine has been running. Sometimes its worse than others. When I pulled out the glow plugs to do the compression test, #4 came out wet with oil and the others were dry. All my research so far points this to the valve stem seals.

I appreciate that removing the head is the best way. Right now I dont have the time or money for a head reco, which is why I was asking IF its possible to do the seals in situ, buying me some time for the inevitable.

    Thanks

No, I've spent a lot of time sniffing exhaust trying to make sure its not diesel. I'm fairly confident its burnt oil. I also replaced all the injector seals about 10k ago. While the seals were fubar, it didnt change the symptoms.
