We currently have the heads and timing cover off. We'll install the original disco 3.5 heads with composite gaskets and original height rocker shafts. We'll keep the current lifters but make sure we set the preload the the lowest position of the spring clip, not the uppermost position that I did initially. I'll report back by the end of the week, hopefully with good news!

    Thanks again,

    Good evening all,
We have good news - the car is running with no rattles! Thank you everyone for your help! Good people on this forum

There is a rumble throughout the rev range that we need to sort out. The vacuum is relatively steady at idle and when travelling at constant speed, but flutters when revving up or down. We'll have another look at mixtures and timing (also possibly the distributor drive gear - the dizzy actually moves up and down slightly, and the gear itself doesn't seem to be wearing on the flat edge - more on the bottom side only). We did a compression test after 100 km - average 115 psi on passenger bank and 105 psi on driver bank - not sure whats happening there either. Anyway, it's running and that's the main thing.

    Thanks again,

    Edward

    G`day Edward ,

that all sounds good , no idea on the rumble could be lots i guess , maybe take some belts off to make sure it`s not something bolted on , could be the distributor movement etc .

The needle at idle would coincide with your compression reading as would the revs up and down and i would think it is because as yet it hasn`t bedded in .

If need be you could put some oil in the cylinders and do another compression test and i`d expect that would give an indication of what to expect when bedded , myself only if looking for a cause to a fault as i`d expect the low reading .

If the drives bank was last done i`d have no concern over variation .

If in the future ( when bedded ) the gauge won`t give at least 135 there may be reason to ponder .

( No reply because you would have read it and give your Dad a hug he deserves it . )

    All the best .
