110 Speedo - Rattling Sound and No Longer Working

    Good morning all,

The speedo in my 110 is making a loud rattling/constant clicking sound and is no longer working. Its had a quieter rattle for many years, then recently the needle has began to wander all over the place (e.g. randomly drops to 60 km/h when on the highway, then slowly rises again), and it wobbles a fair bit too. I have new cable with smooth arc from the gearbox. The cable at the dash end does spin while driving.

Is the speedo serviceable? Or is it best just to bung one in from the wreckers?

    Thank you,

    Edward

    Hi,

Have a look here: Speedo woes

Probably the same problem. Mine is fine now, still.

    G'day 350RRC,

Thank you for your reply. That link is exactly what i was after! I just pulled the speedo out and tested in with a drill. It's working! BUT, it seemed like there was quite a fair bit of resistance. I'll pull the back off and check the components as outlined in your link.

The end of my newish (20,000 km maybe) speedo cable was all munched - it would have been spinning within the square drive of the speedo input. It is only crappy plastic, but maybe the resistance of the speedo is the culprit.

    Thanks again,

    Edward

I think I said towards the end of the posts about my speedo woes that you should only spin the speedo by hand using the square drive screw bit.

You need to turn it in the same direction as if undoing a screw, after taking off the RA drive.

This is the only way you can feel the uneven resistance in the gear mesh. Using a drill just masks it.

The tiniest bit of uneven resistance causes wind up in the cable, resulting in a flickering of the needle at first, followed by munching of the cable or RA drive.

    cheers, DL

The little white nylon gear that turns the worm gear will have a split in it, maybe tiny.

That's what causes this. If you pm me an email or mob I'll send you some pics and walk you through it.

    G'day 350RRC,

Thanks for the offer. I only just saw this post now - i worked on the speedo yesterday. I found that all the internals were in good condition! I found that simply spraying some WD-40 into the white plastic surround of the drive member (where the cable fits in) fixed the resistance! It spins so smoothly now. A bit of silicone spray afterwards would probably also help. From now on any time i have the dash out i'll spray some lube into here. I put a lot of WD-40 in, but none of it dribbled down onto the numbers or the glass face, so i'd be happy to spray away without having any come out the front of the gauge.

    Thanks again,

    Edward

Do they have a right angle drive like the RRC? On those drives, the end cover could come adrift allowing the gears in the drive to go out of mesh.

I put the cover back in and epoxied it in place. Fixed.

Also, see this thread and scroll down a few posts: speedo gear drive for rrc
