RR - Which Oil for the Gearbox & Transferbox?
Hi All
Dumb question time again.
In the Range Rover manual it states that some “Early” Range Rovers were produced with a limited-slip diff. I have a 81’ and guess it hasn’t got a LSD.
The reason I ask is because the service manual recommends different oils for gear box’s with a LSD to those without.
The book says either 20W/50 for standard gearbox or SAE80 if an LSD is fitted.
Which should I use?

Does the Range Rover have a diff lock if it does and it works you could conclude that it doesnt have a limited slip centre diff.
Much has been discussed on the internet about this and there is some suspect advice out there. I am pretty sure the Australian Army uses a castrol diesel engine oil that is only 10/40 but someone else may correct that.
Rover say use 20/50 I have heard of issues with the main transmission oil pump if you use gear oil as it is unable to pump it, there are allegedly issues using GL5 gear oil in the transfer case as it damages the thrust washers.

20w/50 in engine/gbox/ tcase. Only very early ( early 70's ) had an lsd center.

OK we can safely assume it doesn't have a LSD.
You would think that RR would give the right advice re: Oil for it's vehicles!
I have also heard that 20/50 may be too thick.
I seem to remember someone mention that they use automatic gearbox oil because it's thinner?
Does this sound right or am I just mad?

I think when Frank Shaw designed the box over 30 years ago that he intended it to use the oil that Rover have been recomending for that whole period 20/50, they use this in temperatures down to -30 in europe I dont think it will be an issue in Australia.
The only issue I have seen is the oil pump drive snapping off when the wrong oil is used (EP 90). Later boxes had a steel and not fibre drive shaft on the oil pump these were more resistant to this problem.
I wouldnt use ATF while I beleive that there are sound reasons to do so a tired old (or at best reco) LT95 needs something relatively thick in my view.
These boxes are very heavy duty and will take more punishment than most when used properly. I have towed a 34 foot caravan in 52 degree heat in the north of Western Australia and only run 20/50 with no ill effect at all.

Thanks for that, I think 20/50 will be good enough then
I'm new to Range Rover'ing and would rather ask those in the know than do something dumb.
Thanks for your advise
