Running TD5 with exhaust disconnected from turbo

When I get home I need to investigate what the white smoke was coming from turbo exhaust joint.
Question is can I disconnect from the turbo / exhaust manifold joint and run for a minute or 2 to see whether it is coming from the exhaust side or the turbo side? Will it do any harm.
Could even possibly be just residue oil or maybe the turbo seals.
There was a little oil in the turbo to intercooler pipe when I pulled that off but not a lot.
Should not be steam as new head and gasket.
    Likely fuel or oil.
