    300tdi EGT temps

    What sort of EGT temps do people get on their 300TDi defender ?

    no load @ 60kph on the flat ?

    no load @ 100kph on the flat ?

    just set an old auber gauge up i have had laying around for years and was wondering if it was anything near accurate...

    I have just fitted a SAAS combination Boost/ EGT gauge in Maselai with its 200TDI but a 300 TDI manifold. I put the sender in the blanking plate pre turbo. Have not got proper readings yet but going to Nambour today and will get some. At idle after a run it takes ages to get down to 200 C wheras in the Isuzu I have an Auber it drops to 200 really fast. I was told somewhere to idle to 200 before shutdown but I havnt been doing this with the 200.
    Unless my gauge is faulty or my sender in the wrong place.

    For a 300tdi auto in '97 Discovery (standard) fitted with a Madman EMS1. From memory probably around the 200C at 60km/h on the flat and around 350-400C at 100km/h on the flat but I have to be honest I never really look at it unless I'm climbing a hill with a bit of load. I'll need to run test and get something a bit more accurate for you.

    Just got home again in the Series one 88 inch .
    Cruising at 110 on the Bruce at 2500 revs and from 5 to 8 psi Boost the EGT,s were around 400 to 450 in 5th. Around town at 60 in 3rd around 300..
    The highest it got was 570 climbing a long gentle climb flat in 5th at 14 psi boost.
    Coming home the boost gauge dropped to 3 psi and I lost power a bit. Thought I had buggered the turbo but no. The hose had blown off from turbo to intercooler.
    Remember this is a 200TDI with a 300 turbo and manifold cos it fitted better

    Got it up to 115 at 3000 rpm and still a bit left

    my EGT is reading about the same so after all the abuse it's still fairly accurate it seems...

    Hi Guys,

    I'm afraid comparing part-load EGT levels is not much help as EGT varies over such a huge range for different conditions. You could have similar figures to someone else but still have a measurement error of 50+ degrees and never know it.

    A quite simple way to check EGT gauge accuracy is to place the probe into vigorously boiling water. The easiest way I found to do this 'borrow' an electric kettle, take it out to the garage and set it boiling beside the engine. Once the water is boiling, dip the (cleaned!) probe into the water an inch or two and hold it there for at least 30 seconds, preferably a minute. If the gauge is reading 100 +/ 2 degrees C at sea level it's probably going to be OK throughout the measuring range. (High 90s if you happen to be a high altitude location.) Don't pour water into a coffee mug and carry it out to the car to check the probe - by the time you get there it will be well below 100 C, probably closer to 90C and useless as a test. The water must be vigorously boiling the whole time.

    Due to the characteristics of fully sheathed thermocouples (the only type I'd ever use pre-turbo), if they work at all, they will generally be adequately accurate throughout the whole range. The gauge, analog or digital, could drift or develop errors over time but the boiling water check will pick this up. If it has a calibration adjustment, you could adjust out an error of a few degrees. If the error at 100 C is large (6-8 C or more), I regard the gauge as very suspect and not trust it in future.

    My original gauge is still working and checks out OK after now 16 years in service.

    Where have you plugged your probe into? On my 300tdi it's on the manifold just before the turbo.

    My 300tdi 130 is running a larger intercooler plus has had the pump retuned. On the highway I am running around 450 - 500 degrees depending on load and terrain. I never go above 650.

    Around town it ranges from 250 - 400 depending on how I drive it.

    Well to start I've noticed add roof rack and awning plus all the other crap has noticably increased my egts. Bigger tyres increased my egts. On average 100-110 I'm around 400 flat out going up a hill like on the princes highway heading to moe or the big one coming back from neerim i can get it to 650 but not much more.

    Around town 250-450 depending on factors.

    Stock i was maybe 100 degrees cooler all round
