    Disco2 manual gearbox oil URGENT.

    Hi Guys
Went to Supercrap today to get my service oils, couldnt find the equivelent of the reccomended Texaco MTF,one of the Stuporclerks looked it up in a Valvoline book and said Valvoline TypeD auto trans was the go so I grabbed a bottle.
Ive just checked on the Castrol and Valvoline sites and both say to refer to the dealer for MTF.
Deb is going back to Perth for a CT scan 2morrow so I can send it back if need be.Is it suitable,I see its recommended for the Disco1 manual.

    actually, Castrol recommend Syntrans 75W-85.
MTF94 can usually be had from the dealer (supply your own bottle) pretty reasonably.
For a list of suitable low viscosity manual trans fluids, go here http://members.shaw.ca/jbarge/MTF.htm

Seeing as you are near Perth, see if you can get some Redline MTL if MTF94 is too hard to find. Tim Slako is the importer and distributor and is based there. redlineoil.com.au/home.asp

What's your experience with Redline products?
I'm looking at trying them out. Currently got WatterWetter, but haven't had it for long enough to comment.
Used a bottle of 85+ in the Td5 last week. Seemed to run smoother and a bit more power, but hard to tell. Might be the placebo effect.

Be interested in some real life feedback before I invest hundreds of dollars in their products.

    Thanks, Ian

85-Plus or RL 2 is a cure in a bottle for our TD42T Patrol.

Several years ago the Patrol started running roughly and blowing copious amouts of smoke on start up, and around the same time in the Defender on a trip to the big smoke I noticed some diesel smoke in the headlights of the following cars.
A full bottle of 85-Plus in each had them running smoothly and smoke free in no time, and the extra urge while it was in there was nice
Since then, I've run a maintenance dose of RL2 to keep things clean and lubricate the pump and injectors. Both vehicles are now on 190,000km and still on the original injectors, and they are both running as good as ever.
Actually, after the initial dose in the Patrol, SWMBO commented that she was able to climb hills pulling the horse and float faster, sometimes without the need of changing down where she always had to in the past. (we've had this vehicle from new) The Patrol was actually going better than at any time in it's life. I tend to feel that the RL2 is probably a better pump/injector lube, only from the point that it is a little more viscous. I also tend to use a touch more than what is recommended. It doesn't show up at all in used oil analysis as most (petrol) fuel additives do, which is a good thing as it means it's being totally consumed in the combustion chamber, and none is ending up in the crankcase diluting the oil and eating the bearings. Most fuel additives often show increased lead and tin levels when an oil test is done. Caltex's Techron is probably one of the best petrol additives, and yet it still shows up in an analysis. This is why it is recommended never to exceed two or so doses of Techron during one oil change interval. You don't have this problem with 85-Plus, RL2 or RL3
    Very impressed.

Their gear oils have a very good reputation, although I tend to think there are others as good or better, including from the some of the other boutique and mainstream blenders/refiners (eg Castrols excellent synthetic gear/transmission oils, Motul's 300 series, ELF, etc) I'm using R/L MT90 in the Patrol g/box, and a brew of MTL/MT90 in the Defender R380 'box. Synchro performace is a tad slower than Castrol Syntrans, but the MTL/MT90 brew is better on very hot days/high loads.
I'm using Castrol Syntrax and SAF-XA in the diffs and t/cases.
Apparently a couple of dedicated Land Rover workshops around Perth are using R/L Shockproof Heavy in the LT230 t/case and swear by it.
Tim Slako at Redline Aus is great for info, and is often on the phone to Dave at Redline in the States several times a week (Dave [can't remember his surname] is the actual chemist/blender at Redline)
Neo is another brilliant gear oil (and there were a few Landy workshops around Sydney using it during the mid-late '90's) although I haven't had anything to do with their stuff for several years, other than their excellent 'Keep Cool' and Z12 grease, (oh, and some old, superceded CV25 cv joint grease, which was developed for Leyton House/March F1 back in the late eighties ) KeepCool is Neo's equivalent of R/L's Water Wetter.

Redlines engine oils are stupidly expensive, and while very good, definately aren't worth the money asked (here in Oz), IMHO. eg. Mobil's Delvac 1 diesel oil is as good, (in the testing I've seen) if not better than Redline's diesel offering, at somewhere between 1/2 and 1/3 the price.

Andy , ring Express oils in Malaga they have everything and distribute Fuches oils , they have a great range and deliver via courier .
They have a cash sales section out the back too .
They have greases and all sorts moly graphite .They can mix you any blend and they also exceed Euro standards for all oils .

    hope this helps

I don't think Fuchs blend anything remotely like MTF94, at least they didn't up to around twelve months ago.

My dealer does not sell oil - so don't automatically assume yours will.

Subsequently found out the local castrol agent actually supplies my dealer - not with MTF 94 but with Syntrans - expensive at $20 a litre but does work well when the gearbox is cold. oh and of course when it is hot

Dex II isn't a manual trans lube like MTF 94, or Syntrans, or Redline MTL....

I've used Fuchs for years, have Titan Ultralube 15W-40 in the tractor, their Dex III in the power steering in the Patrol, and used to use Titan 80W-90 in the LT230 but they don't have a 75W-80/85 manual trans lube.
