D1 water bottle cracks and cooks engine?

That happened to me three years ago.
The early D1s had a white water overflow bottle from the radiator, with a joint in the plastic half way up. Ours split one day and the pressure forced the water out. Result? Suddenly the temperature gauge goes off the roof, the wife, who was driving, pulled over and switched off, but it was too late. Engine cooked and not going anyhere.
We hoped it could have been rebored, but were told one of the cylinders had been scored.
It worked out cheaper (not cheap by any means, just cheaper) to buy a replacement tdi from Rangie Automotive in Melbourne, get them to tune it and replace the cam belt, truck it to Grafton and the new motor was fitted.
With it came the replacement upgraded water bottle, which was black and allegedly designed not to split at a joint, which it hasn't.
So now, two years later, we have a D1 with 220,000 km on the clock, but the engine has supposedly only done about 160,000 - and is running beautifully.
I just wondered if anyone else had had this happen to them or heard of it? Were we just unlucky or was it a wider problem?
And, if you have a tdi, what colour is your water bottle? If it's white, you might want to consider replacing it with a black upgraded one.

My understanding is that the original is a black one..prone to failure...so far so good on mine 8O

The white one available from the likes of Karcraft is the new improved version

Its hard when you'r several thousand kms from your stored vehicle and can't just rush out to the shed to double check.

AARGGH, The memories and the cost

Exact same thing happened to me - on the beach at Double Island (Noosa Nth Shore for the Mexicans).

Engine seemed to be working hard, then temp gauge briefly went nuts. Stopped the Disco (96 v8i), pop the bonnet, water and coolant everywhere - motor f&(%*d.
Think from memory the container was black, could've been white though. Yep, it split, and apparently is a common, known fault and the great thing, temp gauge is next to useless in those situations until it's too late, and due to faults caused by o/heating often doesn't work.

Lads at British Offroad did a great job (new engine!!!) and a water temp sensor, (which I see advertised these days from nonLR suppliers), and I eventually traded it and got sweet F.A. for it on a Disco 2 TD5. It was a great truck by the time I got rid of it!

Had to pay out of my own pocket as Insurance wouldn't cover it. Under the terms of my policy, I would've been right if I left it where it was, and the high tide ate it - then I would've been covered. :? And would've recv'd a lot more back than it was worth 8O

    Ach, such is life

My 1995 3.9 V8 Rangie had an original black reservoir tank.

replaced it last month with a new white one on the advice of the mechanics.

    Cheap insurance

Yes the original ones are black I done mine about 18 months ago on my 94 TDI Disco. very lucky I had just got home and stoped in the driveway when it went so no damage lucky me that I was checking for a loose wire for the Taco when it happened.
Got a white one from M.R. Auto at Redcliffe they are so much thicker and better made.
    Good insurance to change them.

Yes the original in mine was black it split three weeks ago at the age of 10 years. The new ones are white and allegedly do not fatigue as quickly. They seem to go around the seems. I bought a new one from the LR supplier at $145, two days later see them on ebay at $77 in Melbourne.

The use of a water sensor has been suggested many times but the location of the sensor is subject to debate. Some say at the highest point i.e. above the water pump. But then it is suggested that this will have water pumped past it by the pump and not be a true indicator. Others suggest the top of the radiator and still others suggest the side of the expansion tank. All require drilling into the housing and the possible cause of another leak.

The benefit of the white tank is that I can see the coolant level at a glance which is the only consolation I can think of at the moment. Also it doesn't leak.

Damn i could have used this topic a month back when it happened to mine... had the black reservoir split coming out of landcruiser park... got it home okay by making a few stops along the way and kept topping up. Now got the white one.

Didn't cook the engine (i don't think) but did have the radiator recored.

I'm still watching though to make sure nothing else stuffed up.
