Pre vs Post EGT - What is the average difference?

I bought one of those InfraRed Temperature Sensors, mainly to use to check the wheel bearing Temps and Uni-Joint Temps, but I thought I would do a test to get the accuracy of my EGT Gauge. My Defender came with an EGT gauge installed "Post" Turbo. I've read somewhere on here that the difference was around 100degrees at the higher temps. My test was only when I got home so it was at the lower temp range. The difference was only about 30degrees. The Temp read was 225 "Pre Turbo" and 195 degrees "Post turbo". I'm assuming the difference would increase as the temp increases but I was wondering if anyone else has used one of these infrared Temp Senors to check their Pre and Post Turbo Temps?

By the time you got the bonnet up, took a reading the up stream temp would be down 50-100c easily.

You are also reading external temperature with your gun . Your egt gauge is reading internal temps which will be higher

Yeah, that's why the temps were down at the low side as I just checked when I got back from a short drive. My EGT gauge inside the car was reading 200 and the infrared temp tool was measuring 195 post and the 225 pre....

    Question

True, but I'm measuring the external at both pre and post, so I assume the difference would be the same if I could measure the internal temp.... but as I mentioned, I'm assuming the differences would be higher at the higher EGT temps....

My bad i got the impression that you were quoting egt reading to your heat gun

    Still won’t be quite right.

Piston temp and turbo core temp will be different to external temps short term.

Of course it will but the op was testing external temps and that is fine if he needs to justify his purchase
