Td5 fuel tank mods - converting to engine with lift pump

    Gents,

Can anyone poke holes in my plans here. I'm slotting in a 4BD1T and the Td5 'in tank' fuel pump is no longer needed.

I have two options as I see it:
    1. Replace the pump with a 300 tdi sender unit.
    2. Replace the sender with a VDO unit, throw in a brass fuel pick up and blank off the current hole.

I'm not keen on the 300tdi unit due to the plastic fittings.

Why are you not keen on the 300 Tdi idea Plenty of Tdi`s floating around with out a issue with the plastic fitting`s .
Hell your Td5 tank is plastic As was your td5 pump was plastic and the only part of them that fail`s is the metal electric pump

You could use a D1 V8 unit minus the pump. Steel pipe fittings on that.

Are you putting the 4BD1T into a TD5 chassis?

Td5 fuel tank mods - converting to engine with lift pump

I ask - has this conversion been “cleared” with regulatory body? I know in SA the engine needs to meet/exceed the emissions refs for the chassis it’s going in.

Does the 4BD1T meet the emissions standards for a swap? As in equal to Spec?

I have no idea about the 4 banger..

I have a recollection the TDi 2.2/4 sender fits. Which should give pick up,return and sender only, without you attempting to make, fit and seal the blanks and fittings on the plastic tank.
Personally I’d toss the tank and fit a long range job from a 300TDi complete with sender and pick up.

I was told that the last build year for a 4BD1T swap is a 2005 model when I looked into it.

Good info. That opens some options for some of the ageing units out there.

All Euro 1 till June (?) 05 which is about when ADR79/00 kicked all new light diesels over to compulsory Euro 2 compliance....until then have at it.

Yeah, been a victim of the failing fuel pump already....and there is plastic and then there is 'plastic'. I have a perception (or psychosis?!) the white plastic on the fittings don't age well and will be a PITA for field repair. (easy too snap etc)....this truck is destined for travel far flung places. Just endeavouring to simplify and ensure ease of maintenance away from parts supply chains.

Personally I’d toss the tank and fit a long range job from a 300TDi complete with sender and pick up.
I have a LR tank from Shingleback Offroad on the RH chassis rail under the cab, I have enough fuel carry ability already. Also not a fan of loading up the 130 behind the rear axle any more than is needed.....I'm saving those kilo's for other items.

Thinking about it more a simple blank (1.6mm flat black) with the sender and pickup is what I should have come up with in the first place! Or if I decide to splurge I'll do what he said....

    Thanks gents.
