Sandblasting chassis in Sydney

G'day All,

Welding repair and body lift brackets underway and very soon will be ready to sandblast and paint.
I am having problems finding someone who sandblasts at a reasonable cost. Contacted a company yesterday who wanted over $800 including transport on flat bed truck to sandblast.
Any recommendations. I live near Smithfield, west Sydney.

I am also considering wire brush and POR15 paint.

I to would be interested in the cost. As you though $800 is pretty expensive. A wire brush and grinder is looking good. Matt

Can't help with the sandblasting, however it took three of us a weekend with angle grinders to wire brush the chassis of a 110 back to bare metal.

Chassis was then sprayed with etch primer and eventually three coats of chassis paint.

I think it was "Gasweld" ( A tool store ) had reasonably cheap sandblaster equipment you hook up to an aircompressor. OR Inquire at Coates Hire - or similar - some years ago I saw some sandblasting stuff for hire but I don't know about now.

G'day Mahn,
I'm doing a similar project, restoring a County.
Rust in chassis caused by brackets on cross member in front rear springs. There where no drain holes so over the years with mud trapped and moisture the enevitable happened. I have just finished cutting out brackets and the rust and welded all new metal. Used the Henrob welder which is great after a bit of practice.
My project not as complex as only a single cab tray-top. A 40mm lift. I have designed the brackets and started cutting them out today. The firewall main bolts will be level with the top of the outrigger so will weld a 5mm thick U bracket on top of outrigger to encase the bolt.
The other brackets are relatively straight forward.
I probably will also resort to electric wire brush.
What etch primer and paint did you use?

It doesn't mention how much the limestone sand costs and I didn't look far enough to find out what it plugs into.

Is it too late to consider using a tube rather than a U section? I know that this would add to the lift by the wall thickness of the tube. Fair bit of force imparted by the firewall to those two points. I'd be welding the tube to the outrigger and then putting a U section over that and welding again.

Have you consulted your engineer?

As for the primer and finish coat I will ask CJ and let you know

Good point Mahn.
I was under impression that with a U bracket, 5 mm thick, around the bolt and encasing the bolt no more than 15 mm away would be plenty strong. However, A tube in the bracket wont alter the height that much so will do that as well. After speaking to a couple of engineers they are reluctant to sign off on any body lift, no negotiation. I have spoken to another engineer who thought that 40 mm should be OK. Other engineers are waiting to see what the new regulations will be from the RTA after the National guidlines in February where presented.
Like you I will be leaving all original bolt holes just in case.

As for hiring a sandblaster I would consider it to be very messy and a health risk. Wont consider sandblasting out in the backyard unless it was properly enclosed and I had good breathing apparatus.

Every man should have a shed and a project....
