Rear Wheel Carrier for Fender. Choices?

Looking at wheel carrier options to take weight off the rear door.

    Obvious choices would be:

    1. Graeme Cooper
    2. Bearmach
    3. Kaymar

    Any suggestions, please?

    Thanks,

    Dave

Howdy xsi (do you own a Pug by any chance?)

I went thru the same about 12 months ago. Here are my thoughts

    1. Graeme Cooper: does not open with the door and does not look that great. Also pretty expensive.

    2. Kaymar: well made, but does not open with the rear door.

    3. Bearmach: opens with the rear door, good price from Karcraft. If fitting to a post '02 will need to re-enforce teh rear door (but not hard).

I went for the Bearmach. Only problem, is that after 12 months of travelling around the country one of the wheel studs broke off. Not a big job to weld back on, but just a pain. Otherwise good.

I have the Graeme Cooper unit and it does open with the door. There are roller tracks that let the tyre carrier open smoothly as the door swings. They are expensive though (about $720).

I am about to purchase the Bearmach after much research. Strong, swings with door and looks the goods. One of those things that once on you will think is part of the car, as accessories should be in my opinion.

Note that you do have to drill the top bracket if you do it yourself.

Only problem is I have seen them advertised for $520, and as much as $750 from suppliers in Perth. In Landrover mags they are about 90 pounds!!!!

I be interested how much Karcraft sell them for?

    Defender rear wheel carrier.

    Hi xis.
I got mine from Rovacraft in WA at a cost of around $650.00. I think it's made by Scorpion in the UK. Very strong and bolts into existing chassis holes at the bottom but a couple of holes need drilling for the top bracket.
Fitted it myself in a couple of hours and it does the job well.
    Cheers.

I've had both the Graeme Cooper model (thanks LR Aust) and a Kaymar, and apart from the fact that the Kaymar didn't open with the rear door it was superior in every other way.

The GC unit had to have 2 sets of rollers replaced as they wore out and rattled like crazy and then the powdercoating kept falling off.

Now I don't know if it was never installed properly but it never held open if on an angle like the original door.

The Kaymar on the other hand never once failed or rattled or lost its paint and totally took all the weight off the rear door and quater panel and locked in the open position. My choice by far, cause really how often do open the back door for the latch to become a pest considering the benifits.

I've also had a Graeme Cooper one. Not very good. Nuff said. Swapped to a Kaymar one, (Aussie made too) and it is FAR superior. I fitted a small gas strut to the underside of the arm to assist in keeping it open without having to use the pin. It helped in slowing down the swing action to stop getting pinned between the wheel and the door. It did hurt abit.
The KAymar is very strong, corrugations don't seem to worry it at all, and it doubles as a good ladder to get to the roof rack. Plus added features as work lamp and jack mount etc.

    Nice pic of Jil seqfisho!!

I went for the Karcraft/Bearmach one as I cant see the point of going to something that doesn't open with the door. Strong build, grease nipples , fairly simple to fit and a good price - what more can your ask for?
