    D.P.F.'s?....Has anyone had a problem?

In the latest edition (June 2018) of Wheels magazine there is a very comprehensive 8 page article talking about the issues facing diesel powered vehicles, and commenting about the issues surrounding DPFs and the astronomical cost of replacing same. They quote a couple of sources, Berrima Diesel Services, and Frank Spiteri a Bosch service agent in Sydney's Milperra, both sources talking about the large number of owners they say are visiting them with issues surrounding blocked etc DPFs (and EGRs).
Just wondering if any of you guys have had DPF issues?

I pulled my DPF & removed EGR on my Iveco 4x4 for safety reasons .

The DPF regeneration occurs at 700+ c Dry grass ignites at 250c

The handbook says don't drive through or park over dry grass / leaves ect . - "Fire Risk due to DPF" That negates 90% of the country & all the outback.

EPA says not to modify emissions equips without just cause . I reckon I've got that covered.

QAS Iveco 4x4 parked waiting for RFDS plane sets fire to bush at side of airstrip .

Also to fit exhaust brake (improved safety) I had to delete EGR , so off comes the DPF too .

    DPF's

I had the DPF replaced on my work Prado recently at 60k km.
Syptoms were black smoke (lots!!!) erratically on acceleration from stand still.

The dealer told me $4500 if it wasn't under warrenty, common with the 4d4 motors apparently.

Cost a lot less to pick a country town 400-odd kays away, book a hotel room, and drive there and back! Do that every 15-20,000 klms, problem solvered (and you're helping the economy of a small bush town to boot!) Win - win!

My dad has an issue with dpf’s - my mum drives 3 Kay’s like a nana . The Xtrail does not like this and has eaten 2 , the Nissan dealer put the wrong oil in and killed another .

i have two diesels with DPF ,volvoxc70 and my RRS .
Both no issues - but a ‘short run to the shops would be 70kmround trip .

    Volvo 175,000km
    RRSport 205,000km
i have no issues with them or the egr system . But I understand the limitations of low emissions high output and city drive ability of both vehicles .

In saying that , I’d buy a petrol next time round .

I read this article as well, & I think it needs to be interpreted in the context that the Wheels journalists have ALWAYS hated diesel engines! I'm sure there are elements of truth there, but I think they are presented in an exaggerated manner.

Most of the problems with DPFs are due to the fact that so many city based vehicles are used only for short runs. This will cause problems with blocked DPFs. My daughter & son-in-law in the UK had a Volvo SC60 (5 cylinder diesel SUV) & this had to have the DPF replaced.(too many school runs!). I suggested a good thrash along the motorway for 20 miles or so once a month, & she had no more trouble until they sold the car recently & bought a Discovery 5 (3L diesel V6). She now has to worry about Adblue as well!

    Cheers,

    Lionel

i used CEM's FTC in my VW and had none of the DPF problems commonly associated with them.

for the money, i don't think you can find a cheaper long term solution if your vehicle has a dpf.

I think all manufacturers have the same issue - some customers just don't drive their vehicles far enough to achieve a regeneration of the DPF. It's not like any dealer will talk a customer out of a sale by asking them what they intend to do with the car. My 2YO work Hilux has 100,000KM on it and no issues - I do heaps of Country KM. Another identical vehcile in our fleet is on its 3rd DPF with under 30,000KM because the driver of it runs only 12KM each way to the branch each day with it. If you're a city driver like this, a diesel with a DPF is not something you should consider IMO.
