300 tdi Range Rovers for Big Jon

just to folllow on from the UHF thread so it isn't hijacked ....

I find the 300tdi the best option in a Range Rover , fuel wise it's fantastic average around 24mpg .
Power wise , it is enuff for me , lots of low down torque .

The conversion was done by Purcell Auto's for the previous owner and the motor had done 40,000km .R380 box and LT230 maxi drives front and rear .
There were a huge amount of extra's done to the vehicle the list a mile long , and the boot was full of unfitted extra's ....

a few weekends worth just fitting everything up

LRHYBRID helped me with his words of wisdom "BUY IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT " AND I REALLY DO OWE HIM , as i have had nothing but good times since

The only thing is the aircond isn't the coldest

I was between a rock and a very hard place , my wife needed 3 major operations for a form of stomach cancer so we had to sell up just about everything , got ripped off bad by a company i contracted to and another guy for the tune of about $29k , my father passed away and i had the use of his car whilst i tried to sell it to finalise his estate , once i did all that then i was clear to buy something as a family car / 4x4 but on a real strickt budget .Didn't and couldn't afford to run a v8 again , and needed 4 doors and it had to have stamp duty insurance ectect ......this one came up and i knew the owner well .

Would highly recommend the conversion in means of econ and performance

    Thanks for the info,

One day my 3.5 will expire and I will have to bolt something else in its place. Diesel is the way to go, I just find the 300Tdi engine a bit slow and rattly. I thought it might not suit the "upmarket" character of the Rangie.

Mind you, the fuel economy would probably win me over given time.

"Slow and rattly": not so slow and yes more rattly, but most Europeans drive diesels by choice..... or is that necessity

Trying to find some pic's of a mates 87 Rangie with a 6.5 V8 Diesel turbo ...hmmmm they are in here somewhere

he has destroyed 2 5 speeds and 2 transfers  all in the name of fun as he says 8O
he doesn't get fantastic econ but boy o boy does it pull like a freight train 8) 8) 8)

I don't find it overly rattly , or under powered .....but i have my first engine leak and it's driving me nuts

    Sounds good.
I thought that the 85 series tyres might have been too tall for the car. What do you think of the MTR's for road use?

Too be perfectly honest they were not my tyre of choice , they were part of the deal ...having said that they are fantastic on road ...very quiet and have great road manners !
I personally would have gone for Perelli All Terrans , but i got 6 of the MTR so im not complaining
The 235x85 are a great size , i will be down the track either getting bigger springs or go the Rangie Spares flares for more wheel arch to reduce fouling on the panels at full travel

I still have a shed full of bits and pieces still from all the spares thrown in ...like spare radius arms , spare hoses belts bushes coolant oil rims [old rangie type] cargo cover spare wheel cover ect ectect .

He set it up to be an all rounder /tourer and that's what we will be using it for eventually

    I currently run BFG MT & AT in 235 / 85 x 16 - no probs at all.

BUT now going to 34" Simex JT2s and 33" MTs both on Disco offset rims - thats why I need the flares.
