    2a transfer case: play in spur gear...is that normal?

    Hi guys,

    I am putting a Series 2 SWB back together (purist may forgive me, I am on a budget)...the gearbox is a series 3, the transfer case from a 2a, the kind with 1x helical / 1x spur gear.

    For me all of this is learning by doing so please excuse my ignorance.

    I understand that the spur gear is engaging LO 4x4 by pushing the spur gear backwards and forwards on the shaft.

    It appears that the spur gear has a bit of play as if the shaft was too thin or the hole in the gear was too big (hope that makes sense...picture a sightly wobbly wheel). I am guessing it should have some play as it is being pushed along the shaft or shouldn't there be any? Unfortunately, I have never heard it run so I can't say what it sounds like.

    Both are out at the moment, gearbox and transfer case, that is, so this would be a good time to attack it...if it needs attacking...budget, remember?

    Yes that's normal. It makes a hell of a racket if there no load on it, like when you run the gearbox without the prop shafts attached. Quite scary.

    Now I just need to figure out why it seems to be stuck in 4wd...aaargh

    I can switch between hi and lo but somehow 4wd won't disengage.

    If your box is out of the car, you have to pull the yollow lever ,which is spring loaded when in the car, up, while operating the red lever. Are you doing that?

    Hi W,

    who would have thought that parking a 60 y/o LR in the rain forest for a decade or so IN 4WD would have seized the selector shaft? Must be an engineering flaw or something.

    Just took off the cover, a little tap with the rubber hammer, wire brush and WD40 and we are back in business.
