Modifying County vent flaps so they open

I'm getting rid of the non working County air con and the vacuum vents. I want to modify the dash to resemble a Defender dash by removing the insert which blocks the vents. Is is possible to replace the non opening vents with vents from a Series 3 which actually open?

The obvious is to find a wrecked non AC County.

However there is a lot of mechanism and jiggery pokery required. Levers gauze screens and cables.

Here is a shot from the drivers view of a partially dismantled County firewall with some of the vent mechanism remaining after the dash has been removed.

Fair question. But I'm getting rid of the non functioning AC system and previous experience with Series vehicles has shown me the value of the vents. The system on the Series 3's was pretty simple, I wonder if that would fit - I plan to get rid of the grey dash insert with the clock etc on the LHS and center.

I think, but not sure, that the actual vent flaps and controls are identical to the S3. The big problem will be the dash etc. The ideal though would be to get all the bits from a wrecked 110 - you should be able to use the bits from any 110 up to current - there are differences but you should be able to work round them.

    Gday
Planning to do the same thing as you Mark2, have bought all the vents brackets heater/fan controls and cables (theres a fair bit of crap) from a wrecked 110 defender as well as heater box (make room for the turbo). I havent got around to fitting it yet, the hardest part I fear will be removing the panels that blank off the vents as they are spot welded on, and not just the odd spot but every cm all the way around. I guess they will have to drilled out unless someone has a better idea. The only part I couldnt get were the grills and the hinge that attaches to the outside of the firewall these can probably be made without too much fuss and rivetted on.

Read a very similar thread on Outerlimits a while ago where someone did this try:
    http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/...ht=county+vents

    and this one

Would be interested to see how you go and what parts you use, good idea in one of the threads to swap steering column at same time to get comfy steering wheel.

    Cheers
    Luke

Early S2 had the hinges screwed to the flaps - should be able to pick up some of these from a wrecker and they could be used on the bulkhead, presumably rivetted on. Note that although there are several patterns the flaps themselves are interchangeable from S2 - current Defender.

    County air vents

I lived without the aircon in my Landie for 6 years as it only went up into the mountains, and I used the space to have an air compressor ( using the aircon unit out of a mitsubishi magna) for all the tyre pumping I had to do, but having vents would have been great, and, believe me, I went into it in great detail and got frustrated with all the work that would have been needed to get it done. A lot of it is covered in the replies you got. Good luck if you proceed.
    There is another option.
The aircon in the County is crap because the compressor is crap.
I have fitted a later model compressor out of a Rangie,( cost $150.00 Incl bracket) it only needed a 10mm spacer and, obviously, 10mm longer bolts and it lines up perfectly using a 1335mm drive belt and the (better) County idler pulley
The Landie is up at the aircon place now and they rang about 3 hours ago to say it will cost $400-$500 to make up the hoses, fit another gas filter and commission it. I cant find any of the original parts.
All thier spanner men are going to the Grand Prix, so it will be there till next week. If you want to wait I will report how it behaves, we may even have a hot day or two to really test it out.
I might even do a file for the projects thread
