    Need new headlight RR Classic

The headlight low beam has gone in my RR Classic. No doubt I should have checked at the time but it was dark and...

anyway the Rover's not here at the moment either so..

did these (late Classics) use sealed beam headlights ? If so are they the same size / type (they look it) as the units on the Defenders ?

How easy are they to change ?

Mine had H4 style lights (but pretty average quality ones) so I replaced them with IPF inserts. IPF is not usually my brand of choice, but they were a good price so in they went. I have fitted upgraded globes (but still 55/60 watt) and I am happy with the result.
Low beam is much better, strong white light with a well defined cutoff. High beam is not so good, but the four driving lights help to fix that problem.

I'm actually quite impressed with the lights on teh vehicle as is (well, when they work anyway) but if I can better I'll be even happier !

H4 - does that mean the non-sealed beam ones, where the bulbs can be changed ?

    Do you mean these :?:

You can even get bulbs that glow green or blue for a while after the lights are turned off. That wouldn't half freak people out, would it !

    There's also a Hella option

    Yes Vlad,

H4 globes. Halogen replaceable units. The IPF inserts cost me nowhere near $400. There is no way that I would pay that much for them. From memory it was about $120 for the pair, plus globes. The globes I fitted are a Subaru Accessory, part no: SA1076.

Handy for me, because we keep the globes in stock at work... They are standard wattage, but higher output. Tricky filament and different inert gas (Xenon, methinks).

    I hope this helps.

    Incidently,

100 watts is the highest legal wattage that you can fit to automotive headlights. IMHO, anything higher is a complete waste of time anyway.
I have four driving lights, 2 IPF spread beams (came with the car) and 2 Hella Bull 220 spot lights. I found out on the weekend that the IPF lights have 130 watt globes in them, and they are still nowhere near as bright as the 100 watt Hella lights.

Ultimately I want to replace the IPFs with Hella Rallye 4000 spread beam lights. I have used them before and I think they are a great light.

It seems from the original post that just the globe has blown. If so there are many choices for replacement from standard H4 to fancy blue ones and higher wattage ones.
If you intend to replace the globes with higher wattage do not do this unless you fit relays. Thats if the wiring in a 95 model is the same as earlier models. You WILL fry the wiring with lots of associated smoke.
To replace the globe you first need to remove the grille. Then you will find 3 screws on the retaining ring holding the insert in. undo the screws, remove the headlight insert, replace the globe and reassemble. Should take no more than 10 minutes for the whole job.
    Hope this helps.
ps, you will get much better service from the globes if you buy a quality brand name.

    need new headlight RR classic

    G'day Vlad

When you go to replace your globe, first remove the old globe and it will have stamped into it: Brand, Type, Wattage both Low/High, 55/60 or similar DO NOT TOUCH THE NEW GLOBE'S GLASS as it is Quartz and is porous and some of the OI from your fingers will leach into it shortening the globe life

Outstanding. So anyone know a good place to buy globes from on Brissie northside ? I ask because while lots of places will sell crappy ones there might be a particular shop thats better than others. All else failing, which would be better Repco or super crap ?

And now that I've looked at the car...

How do I remove the grille :?:

This looks llike it should be easy enough. As far as I can tell the only thing holding it in place is 4 plastic tabs that slip into metal 'thingies' across the top of the grille. Unfortunately these won;t just come out as the metal bits appear to have been whacked with a heavy instrument and are in VERY close contact with the plastic do dads.

Any hints / tips as I don't want to break the grille - I suspect I can't afford a new one.
