Eye Bolts or Eye Nuts which is better?

I got that winch bar and winch I spoke of a while back just about to finish painting it and want to add a couple of recovery points as I did in my old bar.

Im debating whether a eye nut with a high tensile bolt locked tighted in place is stronger than an eye bolt.

    Any comments?

In practical terms I doubt there is any difference, since your safety factor should be so large that any differences are irrelevant.

But the eye bolt would be a bit stronger, I would think, in that any side load is resisted by the shank directly rather than having to be relayed through the thread. But a straight pull would be the same except I'm not sure you can get 'high tensile' eye bolts.

The most important difference, more important than nut/bolt is to have the largest pad behind the eye, again, to resist side loads.

What I did last time was use Eye Bolts, I positioned them in the bar in line with the chassis rails. Inside the ARB bar the way it's weld up there is a box section that bolts to the chassis. I put a plate as large as it will fit in there 8mm thick.

Rob - you've raised a good point - what the eye bolt is attached to is probably more important than whether it is a bolt or nut!

    From Google:
    Shoulder Eye Bolts Stainless Steel

Shoulder eye bolts allow you to lift or place the load at an angle. Stainless steel heavy duty construction. The shoulder supports line load at angles.

The lifting eye nut is perfect for applications where you have to bolt through a thick deck. Use a stainless steel bolt from below with the lifting eye nut on top. For extra strength use a forged lifting eye nut.

    see this link for ratings/sizes

    http://www.fullermetric.com/products/misc/...ng_eye_nut.html

For 3600kg at a 45 degree pull angle, you need a 30mm base on the eye nut.

    Cheers,

    Trev.

Ok whilst talking to a friend who moves machines every day for a living, he suggested I look at these load rings as they have a rated working lift load and design factor of 4:1 in any direction. They also swivel 360° in any direction.

I would use the load rings over eye bolts any day. The reason is that eye bolts are designed to take load only when it is vertical to the bolt, and not any other way

Technically anything projecting forward of the bull bar falls foul of the new bull bar guidelines. Fishing rod holders etc are out.

And I have seen a stretched/torn bull bar from a side angle recovery on eye bolts. I wouldn't use them.
