Not saying you're wrong as I'm sure there are Police out there that would ping people if they couldn't prove they were legal inside manufacturers guidelines, but it is a grey area for sure.

Actually, I read a article the other week that stated max. towing. At a guess the would a date cut off.

Just been scanning through the Victorian Road Safety Vehicle Regulations and there's nothing I can find in there about it, and that's pretty comprehensive (380 pages).

I'd want to see something in writing on a formal, government issued document to believe anything either way - which is what Mr Marsh is saying too - where does it say he's wrong with his interpretation?

Too grey to call either way IMO until such a document surfaces.

I think the article I was reading was referring to tow bars...from 1988 they have to have a rating on them.

I don’t doubt there isn’t a reference document, if there was you guys would telling us.....

Found some circumstantial evidence to suggest that in NSW a vehicle with no specified towing capacity the limit is 1.5 times the vehicles weight, which I've heard plenty of times but never seen in a document anywhere. On a forum I was just looking through a guy called dbart1961 had called the RTA and been given this answer verbally - so it must be the truth right? 😁

Queensland TMR points towards this, not sure how binding it is.

Note: This information can be obtained from the owner’s manual or the manufacturer. If the motor vehicle was manufactured prior to 1 January 1992 and the manufacturer has not specified a maximum towing capacity, the following is taken to be the maximum towing capacity for the purposes of the above:
    • One and a half times the unladen mass of the motor vehicle if the trailer is fitted with appropriate brakes; or
    • A maximum of 750 kg if the trailer is not fitted with brakes.

Here is the link on the TMR, up to you to decide how binding it is......not sure there would be two many people wanting to go more than 1 1/2 time of tare/unladen weight
