Let's wait untill you put in a new unit to see if it cures things cos if it doesnt the situation gets very strange as a clicking unit should trigger the lights too. It's only one solenoid and one contact but there is an electronic microcontroller there which can make noise without closing the contact(you can't open that one)

Flasher relays have clearly identifiable terminals, marked by numbers. One will be power in, one will be power out and one will be earth (possibly 86). One terminal may run the pilot light, then there's an extra terminal that runs the trailer icon. It should be trivial to test one by wiring input and earth to a battery, then seeing if it clicks continually. If there is no globe connected to the output and it clicks, it's faulty. If it doesn't click on test but clicks in the vehicle then there is a load connected to the flasher before the indicator switch, ie someone's bodged the wiring.

And of course there's no point in using another flasher relay without checking that the pin numbers line up. Electronic flashers have been in use since the late 70's so it shouldn't be impossible to find one with the same pin pattern, even if some of the pilot light pins are missing. Falcons ran square electronic flashers until the later 90's.

Good easy way to test for a dud one I'll keep that in mind ta!
Well what I done was follow another diagram for a normal relay (thinking I had a flasher) I think the number were 86+ 85- then I was left with 30 and 87. On the 4pin Lucas one IIRC it had + - w w/l so I matched up the + and - then experimented with the other w and w/l terminals.
I used 4 short lengths of cable with male blade terminals on one end to hook into the fuse box and other end female terminals for the relay.
All that seemed to work well except I then realised I didn't have a flasher relay just a light switch relay which I'm guessing why it popped the fuses. The Lucas relay seems to be rectangle, I think most others are square so that's a bit of an issue for finding a straight swap as well as the pin direction (thus I made the jump leads) I'll scavange the flasher from my rodeo or another scrap car I have and try later when I'm home. Otherwise I'm gonna call LRA they will no doubt have one in stock and their not far from me.
    Cheers Jim

So on your D1 isnt originally the 5 pin flasher unit?

No it's the 4 pin, even the fuse box has 4 terminals so it's definitely the 4 pin. Has the towing symbol, I think withought has a 3 pin one I can't remember.

Ok, then this kind of relay is fitted on RRC and Freelander1(those with towing electrics), many MGs (Rover 200, 400 etc), you should find it easy if you search for YWT10003 rather than after the AMR4873 LR part number

Much appreciated I knew there had to be an alternative, I may be able to source or at a repco then or similar.
    Cheers

Just looked at my Narva cattle dog, and it shows a possibly suitable flasher relay part number 68254BL. Pin connections are 31 to earth, 49 to power, 49a power out and C2 to trailer pilot. If you ignore the trailer pilot you can use any flasher relay sporting 31, 49 and 49a.

Lol cattle dog.... Well it's sounding easier and easier to find an alternative, I sourced a Lucas one but I'm gonna give the NARVA one a crack first. I like the idea of getting old mate Lucas away from the disco lol

Wow still $60-$90 could probs source it cheaper, lucas one was like $52 doubt its genuine. I'll see what I have in the boneyard first, surely I'll have a car with one in it that will work.
    Cheers Jim
