    LT230 temporary swap

    Hi all,
Can I put an LT230 out of a D1 into a Defender as a temp swap while I reseal, re-sleeve and add an ATB to my 2000 defender. I know the high range ratio is higher so that is not the issue (will give me the opportunity to see if I want to go this way). Are there any other real differences I need to be aware of?
    Cheers

Craig I think the speedo drive is different on your car you can likely just change it over
Also the higher gearing will effect the cruise control operation if you have it (actually I am not sure if a 2000 Defender has it in the ecu)
Also not sure about the front output flange size

Let us know what you think of the change in gearing I have been wanting to do it to mine just not sure

    As already mentioned...

The Transducer for the speedo pickup is a different part BUT...
*You will likely find the plug is the same.
*if the plug is different they will swap over very easily.
*Keep in mind the speedo will likely read out as the drive gear for the speedo is toothed different (further in where the plug goes).
*Although again the drive gear can also be swapped out easily enough, I wouldnt bother.
*Pretty sure front output flange is the same (as in was only Discovery 2 that used a bigger front flange)
*While the basics of the diff lock, hi/low are mechanically the same, I cant remember the linkage / cable difference between TD5 Defender and D1.
*Either way if its only to drive around while you rebuild your Defender box, I would simply leave it in hi range, diff lock open, linkages disconnected.

*Leave the handbrake assembly connected to the handbrake cable on your Defender, simply unbolt the assembly from the transfer case, tie it up out the way when you swap the two over.
*When you say reseal, its out on the bench so I'd recommend putting new bearings throughout, but does require a small press, or a hand held type bearing puller and some bits n pieces.
*unsure what you mean when you say resleeve.
    Regards
    Daz

Yeah Dazza, will be a rebuild, new bearings an ATB, re sealed, case bored and sleeve. It will only be if I dont think I can get it finished on a break that the D1 TC will go in. I will just check the speedo against GPS as it will only be in for a week or 2. Then I might build the D1 TC up and put in my sons D2 and change the hopeless Double Cardan to a Defender front prop, maybe.
    Cheers

Dont have cruise so that is OK. Speedo has always read under by around 5kms lower at plus 80. The flange is the same I am sure but will check. That was sort of my plan, see what the higher gearing was actually like. If I like it not a big job when swapping back over to drop in the high range higher ratio gear set.

The gearing will be fine if you run 235/85 or thereabouts
If your running taller you’ll feel it on take off

I too would leave the linkages off if you swap

The worst part of the job is remove/install
    Especially installing IMHO

The actual t-bag overhaul is easy and fun
I assume you have a mill to do the lay shaft sleeve?
It was a few years ago but from memory working in shed no hoist
I was able to do the following on my old fender 130

    Day1
Made bracket for trolley jack, then removed case, stripped, cleaned,

    Day2
Sleeved case for layshaft, Built up case with new bearings, seals and ATB (ATB saves a bunch of time)

    Day3
Re installed including extra soundproofing, underbody black, tidy up etcetc

Weren’t full days and was Cooktown in January so drank a lot of beers!
If you were pumped for time it would be doable in 2 full days.
If I was in your position no way I’d want the hassle of putting the wrong case in and then having to pull it out again!

Wont be machining/boring the case myself, but will get a local engineering firm with a line borer the case, but the rest I dont see any major issues. Will actually be good to see what the taller gearing does prior to making a final decision. Also interested to see what it does for fuel economy so may do earlier so I can run 2 full tanks fuel through.
    Cheers

If your geared up for it a deefer tcase drop build and install is a days work.

Park it up on some.old rims or 4x car ramps.

At the end of the day pretty much any lt230 will go into any spot another lt230 was so long as you have everything that goes with it from the input gear out to the handbrake.
