101 question - Engine Oil for Defender
Ive only had the defender less than a year and so far its been serviced at Landrover Parramatta- so excuse the 101 question.
As the missus does very short runs to work in it I thought Id treat the D90 and give it an intermediate oil change(3months). This morning I dropped in to the parts section at Landrover Parramatta (RiverRoad West) and they told me they dont actually stock engine oil for a TD5... what the ***.
I asked well what do you use for vehicle servicing, and I was told they recycle the used oil...... He suggested Mobil1 as an alternative.
I use "Voyager" 15W/40 on my Patrol TD6 (indirect injection). This is a Nissan badged product.
Can some kind person help an ignoramus?
Thanks
Dave

A good oil is Penrite HPR Diesel 5 SAE 5W-40.
I think that Graeme Cooper uses this for servicing Td5's at his shop.
Others will have a view (oils is one of our favorite topics)

Defender oil.
Hi Dave.
I used to use Castrol Magnatech (or something) in my Td5 but now use Castrol R 5W - 30 fully synthetic and it seems to do the job OK.
I've used Castrol oil in virtually all my vehicle engines and have no complaints at all.
The wifes Camry has done just over 200,00klms and doesn't burn oil and I've serviced that since nearly new.
Penrite is a top drop but I think that nearly all modern oils are good if you use the grades recommended by the manufacturer.

who the hell were you talking to???
next time your there talk to Ian! tall skiny guy at the service
desk. tell him phil sent you!
i doubt that they recycly the oil. what the prob would have been
is they dont stock the oil in 5l containers. but they would have 1000l
containers that they use via oil lines.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>He suggested Mobil1 as an alternative[/b][/quote]
mobile 1 is the oil they use.
personally i wouldnt spend the $$$$ putting full synthetic oil in my fender
if i was to change it every 10000k's! i think this is a pointless excercise.

Please flame me down if I am taking rubbish, but here is MHO.
I would have thought any branded 15W-40 as a minimum would do with regular change intervals (I do at least every 5K, with my longest at 7K after a big trip). But you get better start up protection at 5W-40. The lower the first number, the better for diesels, as you want cold protection for the engine. The thinner the oil at cold (the lower the first number), the quicker it will lubricate the engine, and thus protect it in it's most vulnerable state - cold.
Remember though, once the oil is black, it is no longer protecting your engine, but wearing it away, so the intervals are almost more important than the oil you use. Most modern oils also include detergents that clean your engines. I use Valvoline fully synthetic at the moment, in the 5W-40 flavour, and have been very happy with it. Personally I would be happy to put almost any semi or fully synthetic oil in my Defender, as long as it is at least 15W, and as long as I change it before it is black...

Unitary injection engines eg. TD5 must run a 5w- oil....
15w is too heavy for that engine, but fine in a V8.

Wow - 15W too heavy? Thanks for the correction and glad I always stuck 5W in.....
But I stick to my "change it before it is black" comments....
The best way I find to check, is by rubbing it between your fingers, and if it starts to stain them, it is ready for change time...

I use fully-synthetic Mobil-1 5W-40.
The rotary filter does a fabulous job keeping it clean, and even after 10,000km the oil looks nearly new. Almost seems a pity to chuck it out....
