Excessive movement in output flanges on LT230

    Hi all

Both output flanges in my transfer case have movement in them. I first thought it was play in the universal joints, but when I grab the front or rear tail shafts and move them up and down, (obviously whilst car is stationary ) I notice the output flange moving slightly.

The is no sign of wear in the oil seal which has me scratching my head.

The transfer case was rebuild about 8 years ago.

Could it be as simple as the flange nuts need to be re-tensioned?

Or is it a sign of bearing failure/wear in the output flange?

    Thank you

The bearings in the transfer case output shafts are special wide tolerance bearings that can take heating up and retain their clearance. They are big bearings!

Are the seals sealing? If so I would not worry. If the seals are leaking then maybe start to worry.

They all have a bit of movement but the question is how much is too much I guess.

    Hi Philip

There are zero oil leaks from the output shaft seals.... if fact, no leaks anywhere. Maybe i should check the oil level!

That is normal. The bearings are a loose fit and can just be popped out.

As others have already answered you question, just some info.

The bearings are a ball type bearing rather than a tapered roller bearing, so there is no preload, hence the up and down float.
