Question: did they say why is it in limp mode, and where is all the oil escaping from?
Hey guys,
we had big problems with our newly bought Disco 2 td5. Our flex plate broke 1 day after the purchase, 2 of 5 glow plugs where not wired anymore, our car was stuck in Limb-Mode, our car is leaking oil like a maniac and now our breaks are worn out. We are 2 backpackers who don't really know much about cars, I try to help myself with this forum and youtube, but now we are just frustrated. We had the car for a complete check in a garage, the guy knew about our problems and the money we already spend, so he told us that the rear brake pads are completly worn out and needs to be replaced, the discs should be renewed but he knew the length of our trip and told us that it should be fine if we just change the pads. The front ones are also pretty old, but should be fine for the distance.
Now be booked an appointment at land rover Brisbane city, and they told us everything is really really used, very problematic and they gave us a quote for 2,500 Dollars.
We don't know yet what is true, what we need to pay and what to do. We just want to use the car for around 8000 kilometers and then drop it. We want to spend as less as possible because we already spend much money and we don't want to use the car for another lifetime.
Can someone help us in any possible way?
We are currently on the Sunshine Coast.
Could we take the wheels apart by ourself and measure the real problems?
Like literally any help is appreciated guys.
Thank you so much.
Cheers Marc

That quote sounds quite high even for a "problematic" rear brake overhaul.
You can visually check the pads to check amount of wear as well as the rotor disc condition. It should be smooth and not have an excessive wear ridge on the outer circumference. If its just the pads that need replacing like what Manic suggests its an easy fix and will cost about $100 for the pads and about 1 hours max. But it can get complicated by leaking calipers, corroded pistons, sheared caliper bolts etc
Suugest you find an independent LR repair to re-asses. Im sure somebody local to SEQ can give you a good guide
Good luck
Have a chat to the guys at British off road Forrest Glen. I’ve always found them very helpful. Their prices may be a bit better and they are a lot closer
The only thing I'd be weary of advising someone (with zero knowledge of doing on any work on a vehicle) would be the brakes.
And while for us types ... the tinkerers and enthusiasts, not a problem .. we'll find a way to sort a problem.
But for backpackers, with (I assume) zero knowledge, just the thought of them trying to retract the piston/s back into the caliper to allow the caliper to fit over the new pads ... I'm seeing either much head scratching or worse ... tragic consequences somewhere down the line.

A main dealer will always charge top dollar and, from experience, will always try to replace parts like discs before they are needed.
You had a mechanic look at it and he said you could get away with just replacing the disc pads.
Any mechanic will be able to replace the disc pads, they don't need to be a Land Rover specialist.
As for the oil leak...without more information like where it's leaking from we can't be much help.
Why didn't you get the mechanic who did the inspection to carry out the work required ?

Did you buy the vehicle from a dealer? You may have some warranty
British Off Road at Forrest Glen on the Sunshine Coast would be the place I would recommend.
