You can change the pads yourself with a jack, wrench and socket set.

Question: did they say why is it in limp mode, and where is all the oil escaping from?

Had you come across to Melbourne, I may have found some time to help you fix some stuff.
Like Manic said, brakes can be easily changed by anyone really(not hard), just need to know how to do it.

That quote sounds quite high even for a "problematic" rear brake overhaul.

You can visually check the pads to check amount of wear as well as the rotor disc condition. It should be smooth and not have an excessive wear ridge on the outer circumference. If its just the pads that need replacing like what Manic suggests its an easy fix and will cost about $100 for the pads and about 1 hours max. But it can get complicated by leaking calipers, corroded pistons, sheared caliper bolts etc

Suugest you find an independent LR repair to re-asses. Im sure somebody local to SEQ can give you a good guide

The only thing I'd be weary of advising someone (with zero knowledge of doing on any work on a vehicle) would be the brakes.
And while for us types ... the tinkerers and enthusiasts, not a problem .. we'll find a way to sort a problem.

But for backpackers, with (I assume) zero knowledge, just the thought of them trying to retract the piston/s back into the caliper to allow the caliper to fit over the new pads ... I'm seeing either much head scratching or worse ... tragic consequences somewhere down the line.

Can someone help us in any possible way?

Could we take the wheels apart by ourself and measure the real problems?

Dump the D2 and hire a "Wicked" van or something similar, $2500 will get you a long way in one of these and you don't have to worry about breakdowns

A main dealer will always charge top dollar and, from experience, will always try to replace parts like discs before they are needed.
You had a mechanic look at it and he said you could get away with just replacing the disc pads.
Any mechanic will be able to replace the disc pads, they don't need to be a Land Rover specialist.

As for the oil leak...without more information like where it's leaking from we can't be much help.

Why didn't you get the mechanic who did the inspection to carry out the work required ?

Did you buy the vehicle from a dealer? You may have some warranty
