    TD5 Engine Operating Temp

    Hi,
I have a TD5 Disco that since I got it has run always at half way on the temp gauge.

Today running to work not an overly cold morning it ran at a third?

Can any one offer any suggestions at where they are suypposed to run or if I have a problem?

    cheers

The gauge in them doesn't tell the full story.

They are designed to run at the normal temp position in almost all conditions, and to make it move to hot the engine is then really hot. With the cold end, I wouldn't worry too much, just check there is stil coolant in there. If its cold and you coast for a long time the gauge will also drop down to read cold.

To answer though, the thermostat opens at 82 degrees, is fully open at 96 degrees.

I think they are called IDIOT guages

Apparently when Toyota started selling camry's to the Arabs they complained because the car was always running at half temp. Apparently arabs like their cars to run cool, so toyota recalibrated the guages so that they always showed 1/3 Happy arabs 8O
