Fuel Pressure regulator problems on 2.2 duratorque (Puma) engine.

I developed a problem tuesday evening near Warwick and the engine wouldn't pull above 2000rpm.

Happily sat on 90kmh rest of way home.

    Diagnostic report points to FPR.

Has anyone had problems with this in their Defenders?

Suggested costs vary between $700 and $2800...ouch.

The Ford genuine pricing for the suction control valve is about $480 and the pressure relief valve is about $300. There is a part that attaches to the pressure relief valve that is about $30. You can get the SCV for as low as $130. Its common to about 30 vehicles. Dont get sucked in to being sold a fuel pump. Best to replace all 3. Budget $1000 with labour. Once the pressure relief valve is popped it will never seal again

Is this problem permanent or could it occur occasionally and fix itself within seconds?
I ask because my 2.4 had a 30 second loss of power and then came good. So I'm not sure if this is the cause. Any thoughts?

You need to do a diagnostic test to know what faults are logged. The fuel pressure relief valve will show up as a fault with the fuel rail pressure or similar faults. It usually pops due to a faulty SCV. Once they pop they never properly reseal and will open under full load triggering a fault.

Thanks. It's due for a service and I'll have it checked.

Have you changed the fuel filter ?
Have you checked the fuel tank breather pipe isnt blocked ? How long since you last filled the tank up ? You may have got a bad batch of fuel.

Filter was changed 10,000 ks ago and will be changed again at the next service. Tank was filled a week ago. Pretty sure the breather pipe is open, but will check. Fuel comes from a busy station so I think it's okay. Thanks for your ideas.
