I had forgotten about the following bloke, maybe worth a phone call. He advertises in Restored Cars as Gary's Rewinds, and says he makes up brushes as required. It may also be better if you quote the type numbers from the starter, rather than what it is fitted on.

Rather than start a new thread I will continue here.
I need to dismantle the mechanical fittings off the old armature and put them onto the new armature.
The throw out of the drive cog on the armature shaft is limited by a collar that has in internal circlip in it that sits in a grove around the armature shaft.

How do I get that collar off as the circlip will not ride up and out of the groove on the shaft. I have tried gently tapping it off with no success and then tried a small 3 fingered and then a 2 fingered puller without success - the puller will just wreck the collar if I continue. I have cleaned up the insides of the collar to get any dirt out that may stop the circlip moving out of the groove.
Open to suggestions.

You need to nock the circlip retainer towards the cog to expose the circlip. A bit of tube or loose fitting deep socket should do the job.

Worked great - the issue I had was to get the snap clip off - I just had normal circlip pliers so went to the tool shop ot get snap clip pliers but of course they were out of stock. However with some patient and careful prising with two small screw drivers I was able to get the snap clip off.

Just an update to close this.
I was able to purchase a new 24v armature for $120 delivered and was able to disassemble all the bits off the damaged armature - the snap ring on the shaft was a pain but I managed it.
The 24v armature that was fitted to my starter had press fit collar that goes on the drive end and is deigned to keep dirt from the bell housing out of the starter. However the new 24v armature had a different arrangement on the shaft that would not allow the collar to go on. However if I turned off 1cm of the collar it would fit. The 12v armature I had was the same as the new 24v armature so it seems in typical LR fashion (or is it Lucas) an upgrade was done as both 24v armatures have the same part number.
At about 4am on the day I was going to head up to my neighbours to use his lathe to turn down the collar, I sat bolt upright in bed - hmmm - when 101s were sold off from the army they also came with a huge range of spare parts. The parts that were with mine when I bought it included, a new radiator, a new 24v alternator, a set of exhaust manifolds, a new steering column, steering wheel, steering relay and a whole stock of new parts. When I got up I checked down the back shed and sure enough two new 24v starter motor armatures were still in their boxes - didn't have to buy one afterall. Interestingly one was the old style and the other the new style so I used the newer style so didn't have to modify the collar.
As the brushes I had were only 1/3 worn I used the ones I have and will get new ones to go into my spares later. While I appreciate buyers need to know as much information as they can about parts, sellers really need to know a bit a well and not just rely on computer searches. The electric motor side of things in the early V8 Lucas starters is the same as series 2 and 3 LRs but sellers do not seem to know this.
So the starter is back in and works well easily turning the engine.
