    300 tdi rev range ?

Hi guys i have some questions for 300 tdi drivers , discos and defenders.
My 95 defender I think is running well, good power , good fuel economy . ( 225,000 kms, has VGT, intercooler, fuel pump tweaked, 1.21 TC)
    2200 rpm @100 km/hr & about 2450@110 km/hr)
After 19 years of ownership i fitted a tacho, and was surprised by how low I'm usually revving the car.
Most of the time I'm changing at 2500 or below, may 3000 if in a hurry, but rarely more than that.
after 3000 it sounds pretty busy, and by 3500 I don't see the point of going higher.

I expected i would be reving the car harder from my earlier "seat of the pants" feeling.

I watched about 15 u tube videos ,about 300 tdis, autos and manuals , i didn't see one of them go over 3000 rpm .

Looking at some dyno curves the engine has a flat power curve all the way to 3800.

Are other 300 tdi driver using the same revs range, topping out at about 3000 rpm?

    cheers simmo

    I rarely see over 3000.
As you say it starts feeling busy.
Mine is an auto and 90% pf the time I am under 2500 with 100kph about 2200, 110 just under 2500.
Not revving them hard will help longevity I reckon.

If you want high revs, get a petrol engine.
Diesels are (IMO) a "lazy" engine and are provided with an earlier torque curve than petrol ones, which is one of the reasons they are preferable for off-road use.

    tdi rev range

Hi I don't necessarily like high reving engines, I just figured an engine thats limited to 4200 rpm might pull willingly up to 3800 or similar.
we have a toyota single cab diesel ute at work its done close to 200,00 kms and its joy to drive, the engine is willing and smoothly pulls out to close to 4000. In fairness i think its an electronic diesel with a vgt, but I don't know much about them.

I've got good power and torque from 1500 to 3000 , until I got a tacho I was blissfully ignorant about the revs .

I did run the old tdi to the governor a couple of times in 3rd, but that wasn't the way it was normally driven.
Oh, and I did a few 0-100km/h runs just for ****s and giggles. 😇🙄
Fitting the 3" exhaust definitely freed up a few rev's, the back pressure of the stock exhaust, at least on a 130 restricted the revs long before you hit the pump governor, it would just hit a wall and stop revving with the stock system. The big pipe extended the power curve.

The operating range of an automotive diesel engine is the period between governed rpm and maximum torque.

depending on which one you have over run to 4500-4750.

The tdi Valdez was balanced up for a theoretical 6000Rpm limit on over run but I never got it past 5500.

they start to run out of breath on a stock head and manifold around the 3300 mark,

Yep, judicious port work frees up some GG's and revs.
But who would be nutty enough to fire up the die grinder and burrs and spend upwards of 16 hours porting a new AMC head....300 tdi rev range ?300 tdi rev range ?300 tdi rev range ?
