Hi All,

Can anyone please clarify whether a 1987 RR with 3.5 Fuel injected motor
has an external electric fuel pump or is it ftted inside fuel tank.

Thanks

G'day Baggy,

1987 Rangie should be an internal pump - bloody tank has to come out in our models to change

You can either replace with a Holden internal pump from a Dunnydoor - ask Discowhite for part numbers as he did this to his Disco OR replace with an external pump like I did again using a Bosch VL Dunnydoor pump.

yep.....what he said......its in the tank.......and the tank has to come out....PITA....

at least there is a drain plug on the bottom of the tank........just make sure to clean around the plug.......
so you dont contaminate your fuel......you will need to reuse it again.....

pumps are cheap compared to the cost of fuel these days......

Thanks Guy's,

What's your thoughts on this?

My brother bought on tuesday this 1987 Range Rover 3.5 fuel injected.
Its licenced, but he bought it with motor not running.
Owner said has had it for 4 years.
Recently started to misfire, put some injector cleaner in fuel, came good
for short perod then started to missfire again finally with engine not running
at all. Towed it to local garage who did a compression test and said was low
compression in 3 cylinders.
Done 375,000 kms.
We haven't done compresson test to verify what he said.
Does this sound realistic?
Can the V8 compresson fail like that?
Motor cranks over, checked spark seems ok, but we can't smell to much in the
way of fuel hence the question on where the fuel pump is.

Before I bought my Disco Series 1 many of the write up told of the V8's reliability
with many doing 500,000 kms before major work needed to be done.
I've just bought 1981 RR 3.5 carby it shows 575,000 kms on odo its very original
and motor runs sweet, but I don't have any history as to if motors being overhauled.

Your Thoughts

Cheers

Baggy

Anything over 250k thats still running good has had a top end rebuild but the bottom ends are good for maybe 500k if looked after, sounds like the rr needs cam/ lifters/ t/chain and valve job.

It's pretty easy to check the fuel pump, just disconnect it at the engine, maybe extend it with some pipe to make it safer and then get a colleague to turn ignition on for a few seconds whilst holding your thumb over the line.
Take the usual precautions neede for petrol vapour.
There should be a fair bit of pressure, but not enough to overpower your thumb

From your description, it could also be a sign of head gasket failure....

head gasket failure could explain the low compression.....
but what about the engine running for a while with the injector cleaner....?coincidence maybe......its quite possible.....
but if it was running smoothly when it started i think the problem lies elsewhere......it may have more than one problem....

back to fuel pump...? they were a common problem....so were the head gaskets....and valves not seating....

this one is tricky....it just sounds like too simple a problem.......

start with checking the fuel pump....install a fuel pressure guage and see if it has pressure....
also check if the pressure drops just before the engine dies.....this is easier than removing the pump only to
find out there is nothing wrong with it.....

if that is ok......then conduct your own compression tests.....both dry and wet tests....

what ever you decide to do....keep us posted with the results....

Something else that has caused the engine to be "lumpy" on on one of my old RaRos was one of the electrical connectors on the injectors being ever so slightly loose. PITA - We even considered pulling the heads off to clean the valves as it was showing similar symptoms to sticky valves.
