Thread: Steering Lock STuck!

Hi there, I am a new here Need some help please.
I have a 1985 Landrover County 3.5l on gas. Great car but it has been out of action for a little while and am trying to fix a few small items to get it rego'd. I have been taking it aroung the block to keep everything 'ok". Or so I thought.
Today I replaced the left hand door mirror which was reasonable painful because I had to get nuts, nut holders and bolts for the door hinge from Melbourne!. (someone had been in there before and stripped them) Anyway - went to drive it around the block to savour the new rear vision when the steering wheel lock appears to have jammed on in my driveway.... I have tried a lot but cannot seem to "unlock" it. Power steering fluid appears fine and I charged the battery to make sure it's not that. Proper ignition key and no amount of "waggling" the wheel while turning the key releases it.

Does anyone have any advice as how to unlock or disable it just so at least I can get the wheels straight and the car back into my part of the driveway?

    Thanks in advance.

btw: I have been googling land rover for about a year and this is the 1st time I came across this site....

Remove the ignition barrel and lock in one then try and fix it, remove the plastic column shroud and undo the 2 security bolts(you may need to cut slots in them with a hacksaw blade so you can use a flatblade s/d to undo).

ahhh... I am trying to loosen the bolts from the collapsible column shaft and the main steering column shaft but have had to remove the gas gear and move a multitude of pipes and what not I can&#39;t belive the engine bay is that cramped on that side. I have been able to get the car off the main driveway(front house in a battle axe block) but its still blocking my drive way and flat mates don&#39;t want to leave there cars on the street tonight. I will give that a go thanks as I can&#39;t seem to get the shafts free enough to turn the wheels and roll it forward.

Missed the canberra v sharks match but luckily its on the radio.

    as loan rangie said.

remove the steering wheel cowl and get a cold chisle and undo the 2 security bolts and remove the lock/barrrel in 1 hit.

Then if the wheel moves its a dicky lock/barrel assemb.

i then replace the security bolts with high tensile bolts. End of the day the last thing a theif will do is "think" you might have replaced the secuity bolts......

What about jacking the front using a trolley jack and manouvering it manually?

If you want to move it up hill, jack it with a trolley jack, and point it in the right direction, and then drive it (after lowering).
Repeat this as many times as needed.

Jeez i think I may have found the problem

I am guessing there should be some shiny security bolts as described above in place of the loose fitting rusty ones that I don&#39;t think fit anyway? And I am also guessing that the wire with the big orange warning label should be attached to the power terminal like it says? I am disapointed. Feels like I have been careering near an edge and didn&#39;t even know it.

I will have to read up more and see what I can do. I am thinking of taking off the lock mechanism. I have the heabie jeebies now and the same scenario at 100 like u say rovercare is not very palatable.

    Thanks for the advice. If I had off taken the steering wheel cowl 1st I might have seen that and it would have saved me a lot of spanner work&#33;

Thats Scary that it is loose.
    remove them, clean it up
Replace them with High Tensile ones and use some loctite.

remove the lock part if your worried. persoanly i would not as i like steering lock. makes it helpfull when your on slopes... it can only roll 1 direction that way.

and as for the chunk missing out of the dash uder the left hand bolt in the pic looks like it has been loose for quite a while.....

if you tighten it all up in position it should be good as new again........and loc-tite the bolts......

another good idea would be to buy a lottery ticket......</span>
