Thread: Is working on an LT95 easier than an LT77?

    Is working on an LT95 easier than an LT77?

    I've been reading up on the LT95a and it seems like would be easier to rebuild/refresh than an LT77 or R380. Seems much more like the old Series 2 and 3 boxes. Am I correct or am I delusional?

    Also does anyone still sell the TRB conversion for the LT95?

    Bearman would be best to answer this but from what I’ve seen the LT95 is a big step up from a series box but not sure where it fits in regarding the LT77 or R380 as far as complexity goes.

    lt95's harder than the 77 and the 85, marginal against an r380.

    The LT95 is hard just because it's such a giant lump. Unlike every other box you can't remove the transfer case, which makes it a pain to deal with.

    Well, I would wager the LT77 is, but only over time. You will end up working on the LT77 more than the LT95 over its lifespan I reckon. So if you take the long view... LT77.

    People say that but the original LT77 in my RRC did 380,000KM including towing a caravan around Australia 3 times and was still going ok (but noisy) when I removed it - the engine was in worse condition after those KM.

    I'm sure the LT95 is the stronger transmission, what I'm wondering is if it is simpler to overhaul from a technical standpoint. I've taken an LT77 apart but it was not worth rebuilding due to the extent of the damage caused when the layshaft bearing failed. It did not seem like a freindly unit to work on compared to the Series units but so many years have gone by I may not have a realistic recollection of the Series boxes. The LT77 requires special tooling/jigs to work on it (at least that is what the shop manual states). The LT95 from what I've seen so far doesn't seem to require any dedicated LT95 specific tooling or jigs to work on it but I'm not sure of this (I don't have an LT95 shop manual at this time, seems I need to get one).

    I honestly can't say which is harder as I have never done an LT77. Plenty of 95's though. They are not that difficult but the important stuff is the preloads and quality bearings.
