Td5 accoustic engine cover - permanent removal

Has anyone removed the accoustic hood on their Td5 at all? I hate these things. I had mine off recently with the oil/filter change and found plenty of accumulated mud and junk all over the place. One thing I hate sitting around is caked-on mud. It draws and keeps water near to the metal surfaces, and doesn't allow drainage. A great way to start rust pockets. I'd like to be able to rinse off the engine after every outing so it's kept as clean as it can practically be. Only way to do it properly is to keep removing this cover - or leave it off permanently.

I was wondering if anyone actually has theirs removed permanently (as if the car isn't already loud enough)... or is it required to be in place to act as a splash buffer to keep water out of the wiring looms or something?

i think its only really there for the looks

oh and to hold the oil filler cap cover thingy

or you could fit some wing nuts to make it easier to remove and keep it on for the noise side of things....</span>

I was thinking the same. I had mine off a few weeks ago to do the injector wiring harness and reckon cabin engine noise is actually less withy it off?? Go figure!!

It is an acoustic cover to try and reduce the engine noise. No problem with leaving it off. The one on my Disco used to rattle because the rubber bushes in the mounting points squashed down. A couple of extra washers under the bolts did the trick.

I drove around with the thing off for a few days and didn't notice any increaed noise. I only put it back on because I couldn't find a better place to store it!!

Is there any drama with heat from the donk and I end up with blistered paint on the bonnet???Want to get rid of mine too as every winter the mice move in under it.

From what I understand it is only an accoustic cover to divert engine noise away from the fire wall / windscreen / bonnet area. It may have some heat shield qualities but as a incidental benefit only. The td5 would not get any hotter than the tdi and that did nit have the same cover type. If it was for heat then the exhaust would have been guarded as well. If heat was such an issue I would think that it would melt the cover anyway.

Isn't the paint protected somewhat by the heat/ sound deadening blanket on the innerside of the bonnet?
