Acetone and a scrubbing brush ,
Hello All,
Just asking people what your tips, tricks and favourite cleaning chemicals are for cleaning a Series gear box while it is out of the vehicle?
I have been degreasing and pressure cleaning a gear box that is from a pretty neglected Series 2A. After scrapping off the bulk of the layer of gunk that was hiding the contours of the gear box, I gave it two treatments of degreaser and pressure cleaning.
What has been left behind seems to be a layer of gluey, waxy mastic tarry almost baked on build up on the top surface of the gear box face. Degreaser does nothing to penetrate this layer. Scrapping it off with a scraper does not bring it back to a clean surface. It does not move with a pressure cleaner.
Apart from grabbing my wire brush angle grinder attachment, what other alternatives do you think I could use?
Kind regards
Lionel

Whilst burning internet watching LR repairs on you tube, one landy expert uses cheap old oven cleaner and after a period of time pressure washer. his big tip after he finishes is a light spray of diluted vinegar, to neutralize any cleaner residue and to stop it going white.
I used a blunt flat head screw driver, spray can degreaser, tooth brushes and a lot of elbow grease.
You can also use a drill with the plastic red paint stripper wheel but it gets dirty when bits start flying off everywhere!![]()
