    Defender 300tdi Tacho - help!

    G'day guys and girls,

Well I'm ready to put a tacho in my '94 300tdi fender. I'll turf the clock and move the fuel / temp guages over, and put the tacho next to the speedo.

Anyways I've been to 3 different Repco's over the last couple of days and each of them have given me different answers, and one of them had a heap of questions for me that I couldn't answer! He asked about whether the signal would come from the flywheel or the alternator.. I assumed it was from the alternator but I'm just not 100% certain so I didn't get one from him...

Actually one of the salesmen asked me what a tacho was - that was scary enough let me tell you.

The prices I've been quoted are $154, $166, and $334! I have no idea which one I need, I just know what I want.

Can anyone help me out? If you know the VDO part number & / or let me know if the reading comes from the alternator or not.. that would be a great start.

I'm not locked to VDO's, so if anyone knows the part number of another brand that does what I need I'll take that also.

All I know is that I need a 52mm (2") tacho to suit my 300tdi Defender... and yes I know you can get them for the TD5 easily enough - but I need one for my tdi!!

    Grizzly,

Go the VDO, feeds from the alt, you can get one 0-6000rpm not 10000 or more like the boy racers want

Takes about 2 hrs to do most time is taken up pulling apart and reassembling the instrument binicale reuse the illumination wires etc.

I put one in each Defender, turf the clock, BTW anyone want one I still got the last one sitting on the shelf.

Thanks Uncle Ho, that sounds exactly like what the guy from the last Repco said. Unfortunately I couldn't tell him any of the answers to those questions :-O

Also unfortunately that one had the $334 price tag :-(

    vdo tach

    Gents,

Installed vdo tach (2", cockpit style) along with vdo temp and fuel guages after melt downs in No.3 son's 96 Defender. The tacho was about $A125 ish.

Simple installation - mind you has Disco alternator, so just pick up the W output- calibration by strobe light borrowed from school.

Took about 2 hours all up.

Temp and fuel guages about $A60 ish.

Temp guage easy - (required the correct sender, though - about $10), but fuel guage harder, and requires the inversion of the tank pickup because the guage reads the opposite way to OE.

All up, about 4 hours, a bit of silver solder on the tank pickup for the cut and shut.

Voila! Better guages and better bling!

Thumbs up Fitting A VDO Tacho

    G'day Grissly

There is a VDO unit in my Defender. 52 MM Jobby. If u want to keep the clock, move it down to that odd looking panel that the cigarette lighter is fitted in. Thats where mine is.

    Cheers, Stevo
