Confirming, where is the timing reference mark? The notch on the casing as arrowed or a pointed screw that is just out of shot inside the housing  at the top of the inspection hole? None look like the pic in the manual.

 
			
		 
	 
 I did the timing on my Series I a while ago and I have a feeling that the pointer is on a separate pressed steel plate which is missing on yours.
I'd have to get down the back shed to check, if I'm correct your timing would be a long way out. Mine was out but it ran OK, down on power and backfired when switching off, runs a lot better now.
