Has it got the Carter Thermoquad on it?
Fuel guzzling things they are.
Better off throwing something else on there.
600 Square bores will do reasonable performance and better fuel economy once set up.
Hello All,
Can any provide some confirmation that there could be a carburettor float issue with a Cleveland 302 motor out of an XA Ford? The engine will idle. However, once extra accelerator is applied the engine stalls. For example, to go from being stationary to driving up a car trailer ramp. Hmmm I have just returned from the paddock where the vehicle is...make that splutters, coughs and stalls as soon as the "D" is engaged on the XA auto box in my International D-Series 1210 van. The engine and gearbox were installed by a previous owner. The vehicle was previously registered and was on the road back in 2016; so the system at one stage must have worked.
Other carburettor related questions are:
Is there a source of carburettor overhaul kits for the Cleveland 302?
Also, can replacement carburettors be sourced that are not "Racing Carburettors worth around $900 from "specialist racing suppliers"
Finally, does anyone publish a tuning manual for the Ford "Cleveland" 302 carburettor? If so, where would I be able to buy a copy?
Thank you!
Kind regards
Lionel

XA would not have a Thermoquad.
They started at XC-XD.
I think they have a 2 barrel carby.

I had an XD s pack wagon with a 351 and Thermoquad and it did 9MPG, even after my having the carby optimized by using it in a technical training session for dealer mechanics. BUt boy did it go.

Hello Tombie,
Thanks for the reply. I have to admit that this is my first ever foray into things to with a Ford engine. So please do not be offended when I ask you... in your reply you were writing in English weren't you? All I felt was a breeze passing over my head. I am at the very steep part of the learning curve here with Ford engines.
The selling points of the D-Series 1210 International van was that it had an engine that worked. The van was videoed moving around a paddock by itself. No obvious tow ropes or hidden tracks underneath to be seen.
Whereabouts on the carburettor do I look for the words that identify it as what you described?
Kind regards
Lionel
Hello PhilipA,
Okay Hume Carburettors - they are the mob I bought a rebuilt Holden 202 carburettor from and they do very good work. The 202 is in one of my 109 tray back utes which was originally fitted with a Land Rover 2.6 litre six cylinder motor.
When I went to their website a couple of years ago, I was only looking for Holden stuff. My original vehicular stomping grounds.
Philip I would not be surprised if a different type of carburettor was put on top of the engine. The engine and gearbox have been transplanted into a 1973 D-Series 1210 International four wheel drive van - ex Telecom Service vehicle. They must have known what they were doing though as the transfer box still works and can engage four wheel drive.
Kind regards
Lionel
Sounds like a blocked accelerator pump circuit.
Could be just a buggered accelerator pump.
The old WW Strommy is a good carby and easy to work on.
Holden used them too.
Hello All,
One of these jiggers! I will lift the bonnet, grab a ladder and crawl around the engine to see what is what.
My other question with the engine and auto box - it looks like the Inter van was used for camping - not hauling something like a loaded 3.5 tonne car trailer. Is the engine/auto box combination only suited for hauling the van around by itself?
Please remember that most of my Australian made vehicle experience is with Holden six cylinders. Oh and my VH Limited Edition Vacationer Wagon that had a factory fitted 4.2 V8. I paid a mechanic to work on full services for the vehicle. I could not have told you what type of carburettor was fitted to it.
I had started just a new career when I had the VH and only had time for a young family, work and study.
Kind regards
Lionel
Hello All,
The intentions of the van is to be able to use it as my main tow vehicle. Being able to tow a 3.5 tonne rated loaded car trailer.
I want to be able to keep driving the vehicle around while it is has worked carried out such as rust repairs.
It is a gas/petrol system. An expired gas tank that takes up a massive amount of space in the back of the van - the tank is expired.
Ultimately, I will be replacing the petrol system with a diesel. When the original engines wore out, or the owner did not like the fuel bill the original International petrol motor was most frequently replaced with a Perkins 6-354 diesel motor. Until this happens I would like to get the Cleveland engine running reliably without spending a motza on it.
I just got a reply from the previous owner ... the van had: new plugs, leads, carby rebuild, fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil, new battery, fresh fuel. However the PO is very similar to me - a very novice tinkerer.
Kind regards
Hello All,
My apologies for asking what must seem like a string of uninformed questions. This could be attributed to how I first laid eyes on the van yesterday at 8:00 am. At the time V8 Ian and I were more concerned with loading it onto a trailer and hauling it up to Bundaberg. We arrived home at around 8:30 last night - well and truly dark by then.
I just automatically assumed that the carburettor would be fitted as standard to a Cleveland 302. I do have a engine manual book on the way to me via Australia Post.
Okay - the carburettor is a Holley. Using my contact lenses and my "bring-em near" glasses ... I think I can see
LIST-74481 then below that 0572.
On the flat horizontal plate that forms the base the following number is cast into it: 6R 1919 B
Even in Holdens the word "Holley" to me is associated with good quality.
I did notice that there are racks for the ignition cables to clip into and these have not been used.... Hmmm
Here are some photographs that I took for people with better eyes than mine to interpret.
What do the Holley identification codes mean?
Kind regards
Lionel
It looks like a rat has been at it.
Manual choke which is good. AFAIK it is a Holley 350.
I cannot remember rmuch about them, but they have "power valves" in that segment between the bowl and the venture.
It could just be old fuel or that a powervalve has gummed up, or maybe something more seeing rats have been at it.
It certainly isn't pristine that is for sure.
Some people lower the float level so that they do not flood on steep hills so that may be it, as they are notorious for that.
Regards PhilipA
