    ps pump leak

    Hi all
my ps pump ( 98 300tdi disco)has had a leak since I got the car 20000k ago. It weeps at (wot I think is) the low pressure line gasket housing and/or bolts on the gasket housing. This is the line closest to the block looking up under. It weeps out even when not running. Not a mjor leak-top up every few weeks or so. Does this sound like a repairer or a replacer-book says cant repair and I see by a search of this site that other have concurred with this. Is this likely to lead to a major failure or just keep leaking??
    thanks

If it leaks as you have said it must be repairable, they had to put it together at the factory.

The pump is in two parts and between those parts is a gasket with bonded "neoprene" pressure seal . (not available as a replaceable part)

If that fails you will know it because it is in the high pressure zone and it will gush PS fluid.

Have you tried refitting and tightening up the hose clamp on the low pressure line where it joins the pump...this worked for me. It doesn't take much for the connection to weep fluid.

The high pressure line is a swaged connection to the pump and it needs to be unbolted...try reconnecting this as well and hve a good look at it while you are there.

Not a pleasant job as it is done on your back reaching up but give these two things a go.

Yeh tightened both of these-but it is pretty clear that the leak is above those joins-if I wipe it all clean then have a look the next day there is oil on the housing bolts and it runs down the low pressure line. Is this an urgent fix??
    cheers

If it is on the low pressure side then probably not.

I'll have a look at my old pump (I kept it) to see where the problem might lie...If I took some would some photos of it would that help?

    OK

The low pressure side is the one on the right.

A flanged spigot (not shown), to which is clamped the hose, bolts on to the body of the pump.

This is probably where the leak is.

I just bolted mine onto the replacement pump ...I think there was a gasket?...maybe you should remove the flanged spigot and check out the gasket. Sounds like a job for gasket goo.....a bugger to get to without taking out the pump

At least try tightening the bolts

yeah I think that makes it pretty certain that it is the gasket on the low pressure side at fault-I had thought it might have been coming along the bolt threads but that cant be can it(?). I dont reckon I could get that apart w/out taking the pump off-PIA. Spose I will try taking tightening the bolts right up-then maybe drain abit of fluid out and top up with moreys ps stop leak to slow it down-If it can last another 6 months or so I can do that when I do the timing belt. If that is it then I dont have to worry about catastrphic fluid leak, but leaking onto belts is a worry.
I really appreciate you taking the trouble tonight Mahn. Problems arnt so bad when you know what the cause is.
    cheers

Check the hoses where they fit onto the fluid reservoir, just about all of these leak at this spot. The hoses tend to harden with age and shrink a bit, tighten the hose clamps. It runs down the hoses and goes everywhere.
