Well, here is the go. I need to get this thing up and runing again and don't want to have a vehicle just sitting there as it costs me money to be idle, so I'll replace the head and get it up and running again hopefully sooner rather than later.
But...
M57 is on the agenda and a pathway I'm looking to take, but I want to do this properly and to do that will take some time.
Max Wiseman in the UK can supply me with the full conversion kit, so looms, hoses, radiator packs, adaptors, mounts etc. This does a full integration into Disco2. This kit he cant manufacture for me until April, but then shortly after he told me this he posted on FB that he is now closed to orders until March because he is moving workshops and pretty busy with existing orders, so that will push timelines back further. I need to find an engine, gearbox, ECU, gear selector and I think possibly throttle pedal also and I need to find a good complete unit with low km's for this. No point in putting an old motor/gearbox back in. Finding these may also take me some time.
I want to do this really well also, so I will be looking to find a M57D30TU2TOP which is the 210kw, 580Nm spec motor and thats a harder task, especially with low km. ZF 6HP auto unless in the unlikely chance that I can find it with the ZF 8HP. I know lots talk about upgrading the M57 motors to produce greater power, but I just want the motor to be stock standard, as it came, with no fluffing about or issues with things not being quite right or potentially compromising the motor or gearbox, but I also dont want to have 130kw when I can have 210kw. Also, because I want to retain ACE, there is some additional work that needs developing. Max is going to try to workout how to replace the PAS pump on his test motor with the ACE pump so that ACE can remain operable. Historically in conversions the ACE has been removed, but I think Max wants to retain ACE and A/C on his vehicle also (the AC compressor being another location the ACE could go). The PAS will be changed from a crank driven pump to a more modern electric PAS pump. It looks like early type Astra PAS pumps provide enough pressure and flow, and the later Astra PAS pumps (but earlier ones) will give variable power assistance, but mounting the ACE pump is a problem that needs to be solved prior to the conversion.
Timing of all of this, and the timing of what goes on at my work means that any conversion wont happen until late this year at the earliest... if at all. This stuff gets expensive. With the increased power, I'm also really interested afterwards in a big brake kit which has just been developed in the UK to make sure the Disco stops quickly and every time.
So, thats what I'm thinking with the AMC head and M57 at the moment.
Cheers

The holes in the head gasket tab are supposed to be visible before removing the head.

From memory, but its been a long time since I was R&R'ing a TD5 head, the tab is just rearwards of the water outlet, but I was able to order the correct gasket without waiting to remove the head.
Edit: Below the water outlet, just rearwards from the timing chain.

Thanks for this Graeme, I also found this from the Turner Engineering site:
TD5 head gasket LVB000250 1 hole
To find out which head gasket type is fitted to your engine: As you stand in front of the vehicle facing the engine, on the right hand side where the head meets the block behind the front timing cover a piece of head gasket sticks out which will show either 1, 2 or 3 little holes.
Graeme, did you find it to be a straight forward job with a WSM or something you would send off?
Cheers

Sorry, I not sure of your question. Are you referring to the identification of the gasket or the task of changing the gasket?
I followed the WSM for the R&R.

It becomes someone else's problem if something's amiss afterwards. I read about people putting the removed head down on a flat surface and destroying all the injectors!
