I sourced an air compressor from an early model Discovery as it had the drive belt configuration I needed for the serpentine belt on the Prado, it is what I call a wobble plate type where as the original Endless Air type and generally used is the 5 piston Sanden (I think that is what they are) it has the standard V belt. If you use the Sanden compressor it is recommended to drill and tap a grease nipple on the inlet side and give it a couple of pumps every 12 months or so.

I used 6mm plate and did my own cutting, bending and welding to fit where it is, I originally used 3mm plate but it cracked with the vibration. I don't have one on the Prado but on a previous patrol I installed a 5 Litre air tank I fabricated from a primas gas bottle, it was mounted under the tray outside of the vehicle cabin so I was not too stressed if I had a catastrophic failure.

Here are a couple of photos of the Prado setup so I hope it gives you some idea.

Forgot to mention I then just did a rough measure and bought a longer belt and a spare, from Autobarn
How many tyres (say from 15psi to 30psi) would a 5l tank do before the compressor kicks in?

Hi Chris, it kicks in fairly quickly. I had a 110 on, 80 off pressure switch so it does not take long to lose 30psi. Even when just idling it will inflate a tyre much quicker than a 12 compressor with or without a tank, if you can crack the rpm up to 11 to 1200 rpm it is much quicker again and of course it will run all day.

The real benefit of a tank is if you want to blow out an air filter, the initial rush or high pressure air is great. The other great benefit is that it will run my full length truck horn which I have now mounted in the bull bar of my D4, I have a 4L tank to run it. I will see if I can post up a sound bite. It also enables you to run small air tools but it is very on of waiting to build up pressure each time. 12V battery tools are the go these days.

I have a Juice (manufacturer, or label sticker) Boss twin 12V compressor it looks the same as the Kings Thumper only yellow, mounted behind the second row seats. I have not had the chance to use it in the real world yet so cannot comment on its reliability.

    Regards
    Geoff

I can pump up the 255/100/16’s on the 101 at the same speed you could do them at the servo. Compressor kicks in and out during this sort of thing so keeps up easily to this sort of work. Please recommend me a 100% duty cycle 12v air compressor

Given where the 101 lives it’s actually the easiest air to access our the front of the property so often I’ll start the 101 up to pump up the tyres on something else - I think of it as my V8 powered air compressor. While rerouting some wiring in my county 110 I’ve managed to cook a motor in a 10yr old twin cylinder ARB air compressor. Before shelling out money to get an older unit repaired I thought I look into what else is available. I will be using it all the time for full air suspension at the rear as well as two air lockers.

In not interested in budget compressors as I need to be able to rely heavily on it.

    what say you wise forum?
If you look on the web at the air suspension conversion websites for lowred suspensions you should find a good selection of heavy duty 100 % cycle compressors. TRy airbagit or airride and there are plenty of others.

These sites also have all the air compressors volumes listed as well. There are a lot of options for air suspension if want to make your vehicle jump as well .
