    Block heater for Td5

Hi. I’m in the process of buying a 90 with a Td5 in it (my first LR in 30 years), and due to where I live I’m going to need some form of engine heat to ensure that it will start (it was -44c this morning, -55c with the windchill. Do you have any idea how many cups of tea it takes to keep warm in those temps?)
My first choice is a simple block heater, but the problem is that no-one makes one. Not LR, and I haven’t been able to find an aftermarket one either. I’ve just heard of a friend of a friend who has a 300tdi (for which there is also apparently no such thing as a block heater), but he found one from a Ford tractor that fits and, he says, melts the snow off his bonnet.
The core plugs in a TD5 are 28mm and 46.5mm, apparently. I can find a 28mm block heater on Amazon for $100 and it may fit, but I’d love to hear from someone who found one that did for sure fit – tried and tested.
I’m aware that there are alternative options (e.g. Webasto), but that will be $3000 fitted whereas a block heater is a fraction of the cost and I can fit it myself. If I can find one. Someone somewhere makes a block heater that will fit. It won’t have been designed for a Td5, and whoever makes it may not know what a Td5 was if it fell on them out of a tree, but it will still fit. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I doubt if anyone in Australia has a block heater fitted to a TD5 as it rarely gets under 0C except in the mountains..

As a coincidence I yesterday got an email from Ali Express for what looks like a 'stick on" sump block heater and it was quite cheap.

You could contact Mike from Britannica restorations. Google him, he’s in Canada, but recently did a video on installing a block heater in a 300Tdi.

Thank you for this, travelrover. I spoke to Mike a couple of months ago and he did not know of a block heater that would fit the Td5. I'm determined to find one that will fit, though!

There are a couple of types of oil plan heater that I'm aware of, one being magnetic and the other a heater 'pad' that you silicone on, but I'm looking for something that will heat the coolant. I appreciate the help, though!

if your EGR cooler has been deleted......

use the EGR cooler to take the exhaust of a diesel heater, fit a diesel heater, route it so you have an inch feed off of the hot air into the engine bay and point that at the startermotor/intake area.

route the exhuast so it passes vertically downwards through the relocated vertically mounted EGR cooler and then plumb the egr cooler back into its normal coolant loop positions.

of course the engine itself will not be the issue with starting in those temps, its well glow plugged and is good at keeping compression, the issue is going to be getting the fuel galleries pressurised from the electric pump in the tank down the back...

    to solve that issue.....

a small facet pump and then drill and fit 2 pipes into the tank, add another heat exchanger braise a length of pipe onto the exhuast of the diesel heater. A very smart cookie would use these 2 hoses to fill as small tank in the engine bay for the diesel heater to draw from and set the pump up to run whenever the diesel heater is running
